New Bandwidth !!!

We already know about SETI getting a new pipe, well on a personal front we have been stuck at 24K, yes you saw right 24K since May 2000 when we moved up here 80 miles Northeast of Atlanta but still have an Atlanta phone number. The phone Company has been bragging about how they have the whole County wired for DSL but when I asked what about where we live they said "they have no plans to ever upgrade our subdivision". So since they declared us second class citizens I went to the Chamber of Commerce where they were bragging as well as the paper. I then got a personal phone call from the phone Company rep that told me we would never be upgraded and he told me that "they now have added us to their plans". Today we were notified we can order the service, the order completetion date is July 30 but since I already have a DSL modem and doing self install it should be much sooner as all they have to do is make the line live for DSL.

Another bandwidth success story. Will post when running at 1.5 meg once again as we once had when we lived close to Atlanta and was one of the first to have DSL back in early 1998. A little known fact that Hayes Modems actually helped design the Alcatel DSL modems which became the worldwide DSL standard and I was on the design Team at Hayes that made that one last final successful project before Hayes closed it's doors.

Congrats Dave!! It has been a long time coming!!

When David went to the cabin with us a few weeks back and saw that I could connect at 44k while up on the mountain, he was blown away. But, since I have to pay long distance charges I don't use it!

I could have used you when Comcast was telling me for over a year that I would have a cable modem in 4-6 weeks. After calling them every hour on the hour I told them I was sick of hearing 4-6 weeks....the CSR told me it would be about a month to a month and a half. We both laughed before I told him where he could put his sense of humor....broadband is not something to tease about. 🙂

I was one of the first in my area(Wyoming, MI) to get cable-modem access, primarily because (I think) I was the most annoying phone call they kept getting. 😀

It actually got to the point where I was on a first name basis with many of the reps and managers when I'd call to check on the status! :Q

I sent them a "Thankyou!" card when it was finally installed. 😱

Good to hear that the local Telco is actually being forced to do its job for once, and bring real service to the people.😀 Once you get DSL, you owe us a game of UT, Dave.😉 Enjoy yourself, and congrats.

WOO! Hope that means we'll see you about here more often, Dave!🙂

And i want a game of UT sometime soon too! I feel like being killed by y'all! 🙂

Wow, thanks everybody.

>Way to work the system

An interesting PR battle actually. While the big Telco kept pumping out false postive propaganda it finally got to a point where the President of the Company was forced to admit to the negative politics and money of it all and they did a 100% about face, it was amazing and is all well documented. It should be my second book after the Distributed Blessing book gets written.

>The squeaky wheel gets the grease

Negative PR is the worst Nightmare for a Company, all the postive hype and work on Customer Service in the world can go down the tubes with the bad treatment of just one customer. No one is a second class citizen.

>broadband is not something to tease about

This is a super Hot topic in Congress right now as everyone I'm sure is well aware of. This is the United States and was looked up to as a Super Power in all ways including being on the forefront of Technology. Greed, Power and Politics has reared it's ugly head so much that we are a laughing stock and scrambling to try and regain lost dignity. Everyone has a lot of work to do.

>It actually got to the point where I was on a first name basis with many of the reps and managers when I'd call to check on the status!
>I sent them a "Thankyou!" card when it was finally installed

Hehe don't laugh, I actually did already invite the 2 Reps of the Phone Company to our Neighborhood party this sunday. Also I will clarify here that this was not just ordinary Customer Service reps we are talking about here. You are talking about one of the heads of Public relations for the Company that you see in the paper and on TV and one of the Network Engineers in charge for the Company.

>Good to hear that the local Telco is actually being forced to do its job for once, and bring real service to the people.😀 Once you get >DSL, you owe us a game of UT, Dave.😉 Enjoy yourself, and congrats

As you all know I owe everyone here and many other places in the online Community a whole lot more than a game of UT (actually I prefer Wolfenstein 😉 ), I look forward to getting a Server up and running and fragging the whole bunch 😉

>WOO! Hope that means we'll see you about here more often, Dave!🙂

You hit the nail on the head, as JW and Bot can attest it is excruciatingly slow to even try and do one post which is why you see my post count so low. I have actually gotten into a habit of massive copy and paste to get all I can into one post because of that. It has actually become a style of writing I am used to and may not change after the speed is back. I'm don't see the point or any joy in the tons of posts (NEFs) , time and life are short, resources are precious (No, not 59 cents a second precious). So I don't see my post count going through the roof but I will subscribe to support the system and yes, enjoy the higher speeds.

>Nice story

Thanks, it will be a nicer story once the roadblocks of greed and politics are broken down, you may not see it but Corporate America and Congress have managed to build a Technological "Berlin Wall" in this country and it is high time we tear it down.

Dave

Sorry Dave, gonna test your bandwidth here again!

>I have actually gotten into a habit of massive copy and paste to get all I can into one post because of that.

That's a good thing about having a slow connection, you try to make less mistakes so that you don't have to wait for the page to load every time! I have not experienced anything slower than about 40k/sec on these forums, and i know how frustrating it is to have to wait so long for the pages to load! Your dedication (and patience!) is great! 🙂

>time and life are short, resources are precious (No, not 59 cents a second precious)

I think it's great the way you can take all the terrible things that you have experienced over the past couple of years and be able to humour it! As well as the fact that you probably know we all think 59c a second is rediculous! 😉

Anyway, enough of my ramblings and each character i type takes longer for you to download!

Take care, and see you more here soon! 😀

Garry

Congrats on your new found forum speed Garry thanks to Tim (Narzy) over on our left coast 🙂

Thanks, Laughing is a whole lot healthier and better than crying. The tears are reserved for the pain my family went through.

>As well as the fact that you probably know we all think 59c a second is rediculous!

All part of the laughing stock this country (as well as the State I live in) has done to themselves. The Country will be back and hopefully have learned from the greed and polictics and put people first again as the Constitution and foundation was layed and meant to be.

Dave

Glad to hear you've made it back to the 21st Century 😉 If I had to give up broadband I'd probably give up the internet all together🙁 And what a "byte" that would be for the wife and me.

you owe us a game of UT, Dave.

... rubbing hands together in anticipation of fragging David... 😉

Hey guys.

Good Job Dave!
Gotta love it when the "little guy" triumphs over the bad men at the government, and companies that are too big for their britches.

Didn't have time to read the whole thread ,sorry Dave!😱😉 ,but man 24k that is bad!:Q ,I have 56k dialup here & I usually manage to connect at 50k.

I could actually get 128k or 512k cable modem here through NTL but that would cost me £13/mth or £25/mth more ,atm its totally free for me🙂.
When I move (soon) I'll have to pay either way so I'll almost certainly at least have 128k cable 🙂

>Glad to hear you've made it back to the 21st Century

We're not there yet. Only the order is placed which is a big step in itself. Before yesterday when putting in our phone number, all you get is sorry DSL is not available in your area, try again some time down the road. This is basically how DSLreports came into being. The Phone Company put a order completion date as July 30th when I check on the order status on their website. The e-mail confirmation I got after placing the order said August 15th though. So clear that each system within the Company is not in sync by a long shot, amazing anything works these days.

Here is a link to the Phone Company battle and story as it unfolding over the last couple of years. I dropped out of the fight when I was attacked by the State and picked it back up after the attack was over January 17th. http://www.riverelan.com/community/highspeed_internet.htm

A DanC sighting 🙂 . Amazing how when people get into a position over other people no matter where it is, a private Company or Public position, that they forget that they sit and go to the bathroom like everybody else.
