Hi all. In order to keep my wife happy I bought an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1 for my noisy 9800 pro. My question is this: Should I use the thermal paste it came with or would I yield better results using my AS5?

If you have Arctic Silver 5, use it. Be careful not to let it touch the pins though. Follow the instructions on the Arctic Silver page. Arctic Silver 5 is the best compound for lowering temperature. Its only disadvantage is that it is somewhat conductive.

Thats what I figured. The stuff that came with the ATI Silencer is the crappy white zinc goop.

Not so fast my friend! I too replaced the heat sink fan on my ATI Radeon 9800 pro and used the 'paste' included as recommended at the Artic Cooling site which stated tests showed it's themal paste worked better than AS5 for this application. I used included paste and have had no problems - and it has certainly made my computer much more quiet.

There are reviews of different thermal compounds on the web by independent parties. You can search and see for yourself. Arctic Silver 5 has been reported to be the best as far as temperature goes.

As I said, it has one disadvantage. And, that is that it is somewhat conductive.

Well, I installed the sucker and user AS5. All was working great til I noticed artifacts appearing whilst playing NFSU2, so I shut the PC off, open the case and notice the stupid fan was touching my sound card and wasnt spinning! I had made sure the fan spun but the card must have move down after initial testing and hit the card below it. Man! Was the vid card and HS super hot! I burned myself trying to get the card out and make sure nothing melted! Anyway, I put a spacer between the vidcard and the sound card and all is working fine. Thank God the card didnt blow! Now my whole system is 10C lower in temp. ATI makes a great card since I kept playing for about 5 mins after I started seeing artifacts on the screen and ran 3dmark01 to see if it was the game or the card. 5 mins with no cooling and the card is still alive! 🙂
