New ATI roadmap.

The author says that this new R420 has twice the pixel fillrate. How?

So exciting. This article made my day.

Yeah, I'm also wonder how it could have twice the pixel fillrate. Perhaps it has an 8x2 pipeline... or it's just more efficient... whatever it is the core clock speed alone doesn't seem to indicate that the fill rate would be twice as high.

Whatever happens, it should make my options for T:V quite interesting.

I'm just waiting for nick1985 to jump in on this thread and accuse VIAN of being a troll now as 90% of his 5000 odd posts appear to be nothing but that!

It would appear that ATI are doing the same as Nvidia and releasing a load of marketing hype, we'll just have to wait and see when the cards are actually released

i have doubts bout that too.....will still be a killer card tho

they've added an extra 2 vertex shaders and some speedy memory but the 88mhz in core speed and the slight improvements to an already great set of AA and AF processes etc....i reckon its the return of those old "theoretical" numbers that never get achieved in real life

It seems like a half-generation leap from those specs, though it is too early to tell. I've got a gut feeling that they have something up their sleeve that they're not showing just yet.

Appears the rumors of the R4.xx chips being souped up R3.xx chips are starting to come true.

If Nvidia releases an 8X2 design this will be very interesting as Nvidia will have caught ATI in single texture. And most likely Nvidia will have caught ATI in shader execution units as well. Then it should will be a good old fight about clock speed.

I agree that it looks like a heavily tweaked R360, but I am curious of how much quicker the card will be. I don't think they'd release another 9800 Pro.

In the chip design (R300-R350) the amount of die surface taken by AGP8x might be much less for PCIexpress, that might allow more room(.13µ vs .15µ) for the vertex shader or any other enhancement of the chip(R423).

Transistor count is >110M compared for the new R420-R423 that is 160M. 4 vertex engines (R300-R350) compared to 6 vertex engines for (R420-R423) 8 pipelines for both chips.

God knows what other enhancements are there. ati sure got good experience with the .13µ process thx to 9600.

The other 10% being about how awesome the TI 4200 is and how everything else is a waste of money. 😉

Why not? Whats wrong with Ultimate Deluxe Plantium Ultra FX XT 9800 Turbo Pro 😛

It's not that big of an improvement from the 9700 Pro. It's a good card, but didn't wow anyone with its released being that it performed very identical to it predecessor launched one year prior.

It still wows me, do you have any idea how good of card the 9700/9500s are? They've lasted a LONG time for graphics cards.

Congratulations on your 41st thread of 2004 VIAN. Close to a new thread everyday. Yes, Yes, I did a search just because I was bored.

Ok, so now we know what ATI has up its sleeve according to a reliable source (AT). Now what about Nvidia? All I have heard is speculation. If the real deal has been posted already, I missed it.

i really hope it gets out in april. That is when i will have the $$$ to make my new athlon 64 3400+ system. If not, then i will wait till r420 comes out, as im getting the best of the best for this rig, so i can web browse faster then all of you 😉

I'm not talking to you anymore. You completely missed everything I said. I'm not even saying anything bad about the R300. This has happened before. You post some of the most useless posts because they are based on very vague information. You don't even read the thread or previous posts.

You should buy a 9800XT now for the largest possible amount of money possible. After all, one day you can sell this peice of collectible >*cough*< for thousands of dollars.

[/sarcasm off]

Seriously though, no you should wait on the buying a video card until you see what is offerred by ATI/NVidia in March.
