here is the deal =P
I just got my paycheck and I want to upgrade (still using P3-600 ack!)

I am thinking about athlon xp 1600+ - 1800+ (I see a lot of people getting 1600+ for some reason... can anyone explain why?)
512 MB RAM DDR333 i think...
my real question is about the mobo:
I was thinking about getting a KT333 mobo, since those are cheaper than the new KT400s
if you guys could tell me which of them out there is your favorite I would appreciate it

thanks

The 1600+, combined with normal cooling, a good KT333-based motherboard and some PC2700 memory, will usually overclock directly to the 166MHz bus with no modifications, just a bit of extra CPU voltage perhaps. That, combined with its very low price, is what makes it a hot pick right now :D I've got one on an Asus A7V333-RAID but if I were buying now, I'd follow Insane3D's advice in the sticky thread at the top of the list, and get an EPoX 8K5A+. However, nForce2 is on the way, and it might have some claims to fame too. I think there will be reviews coming out soon, can hardly wait! :D

Yeah, the 1600+ is good for overclocking and such also it is the cheapest Athlon XP I have seen around. Yah, go with the KT333, it is cheaper and still has some good features. The KT400 isn't really that great of a buy for now... you can't use AGP 8X unless you have Xabre and Serial ATA can't be utilised without Serilell from whatever company. so, yah go with the KT333. Salaam. :)

People are snagging up the 1600+'s from www.newegg.com because the are the AGOIA stepping..the same one used by the 2000's. Basically you've got a really good shot at getting a good overclock out of those chips.

I'd recommend the MSI KT3-Ultra2 mobo. Anything KT-400 available TODAY isn't really worth it.

EPOX 8k5a2+ if you want to overclock.

I have this board paired with a AROIA Y 1600+ and Samsung pc2700 and have it overclocked to 166fsb with no troubles :)

Look at my sig for my results with an AthlonXP1600+ AROIA-Y and an Epox 8K5A2 :D.

The 1800+ can't touch this...
