New Athlon 64 Combo / Heatsink question?

Just ordered an MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum board and Athlon 64 3500+. I am switching back from an Intel MB/CPU combo but had previously had an Athlon (1.2Gig Thunderbird) on an Epox 8RDA+ I believe.

When I had the Thunderbird, I used a Thermaltake Volcano 9 (which I still have). Will I be able to use this on the new MSI / Athlon 64 combo or is it yet another form factor as far as the HS/FAN goes? If so, what are you guys running these days on that combo, looking for some recommendations.

Thanks!

If it's that old, it's probably Socket A or A/370 only. You'll need to get a new HSF. The stock one is actually quite effective, but if you'd like something quieter and/or more effective, look into a Zalman 7000 or 7700 series (AlCu version--the all-copper Cu is heavy and puts a lot of stress on the motherboard) or a Thermalright XP-90 or XP-120 coupled with the appropriate fan of your choice. The 7000 and XP-90 include/take 92mm fans, while the 7700 and XP-120 include/take 120mm fans.

I'm using the Zalman 7000 on my Athlon 64 and it's doing a great job.

Thanks for the input, some good choices there however in researching the XP90 a bit, I found this information about it.

"Compatibility across multiple platforms (socket 478/754/939/940)"

I'm moving from a P4 2.4c (Socket 478) platform to the A64 3500+ (Socket 939) as I stated. Since the XP90 seems to support both sockets, I'm wondering if my current HS/FAN combo that I use on my socket 478 setup , which is a Termaltake Spark 7, will also fit on the new Socket 939 setup.

Any ideas?

many heatsinks come with different attachment things for different sockets :) so, if your current heatsink doesnt have a "kit" for athlon 64 mobo, most likely it wont fit ;)
