Does anyone know when the new 1.5 ghz thunderbirds are coming out? and when they do, will they cause a price drop in the 1.2s?

1.5s, not for a while. You can get a 1.2 guaranteed @ 1.45 from compuwiz1 on the forums though.

smp - not necessarily. Intel produced the 266mhz P2 before the 233mhz (to make sure users so a more discernable performance difference by going to P2 over P55). Intel "introduced" the Ghz P3 before the 933, and 866's (not that the ghz was available for a LONG time....). They produced the 1.5 and 1.4ghz before the 1.3 ghz P3.

Why must the athlon 1.3ghz come out before the 1.5?

Well, technologically, I'd agree that the 1.5ghz will be awhile off - I don't think there will be a 1.5ghz Athlon persay. I think AMD will end up making 1.4ghz+ Athlon "derivatives" (mustang core - aka, palalimo....or however it's spelled), due to the lower power consumption. The power draw of current athlons is getting insane - nearing the values that API processors use (heh, they're still a ways off from that, but they're getting closer!).

But from a marketing standpoint, there's no reason why a 1.3ghz Athlon needs to come out before a 1.5ghz. That is, except for the fact that AMD are milking their processors for all they can, and don't need to make a higher clocked CPU to comabt Intel, because the Athlon is already doing quite well against the P4.....at least, for the time being.

The introduction of a higher speed grade CPU always makes the prices of others go down. Often times, there will be a price cut just before the introduction of a new speed grade.
