Hello everyone,
I have been building systems for a while and since things have been slow lately b/c the lack of money, I thought I would turn around and learn how security works. I have some old scraps that could be built into a complete system, however, I don't know how to build a hardware server yet. I would hope perhaps the experts here can help me. Here's the specs for my scrap server:
Athlon 1600+ with ECS board.
512MB RAM
160Gig HD
The rest is just basics.
Here are some of the things that I would like to do if possible:
1) I would like to put Linux on the server and use it as a hardware firewall for a file server or internet gateway to my Windows XP workstations. Is this possible? I like Linux b/c it's more secure.
2) Or I can just use Windows XP on the server/firewall for the gateway for the workstations.
Please keep in mind that I have never done this before though I have some experience with Windows XP and little on Linux.
Thanks for all of the help.
