Just installed my new Asus Direct CU 6970 card and when I boot I get a black screen with one long beep then 3 short beeps. Now I hope its a simple problem, probably is because this is my first time upgrading my GPU. My previous GPU was a Sapphire 6870. I uninstalled the driver through device manager then shut down the computer and put in the new 6970. With the Sapphire 6870 it works fine. What have I done wrong?

System specs:

AMD 955BE
Asus 6970
Corsair XMS3 8GB RAM
Corsair TX650W
ASUS M4A87TD/USB3

Check to make sure the card is fully seated in the PCI-E slot, and check to make sure your power connectors are pushed all the way in. We'll start there...

Yeah, 4 beeps generally means that your PC thinks a GPU isn't installed. Can you try reseating it?

Did you try any of the following yet.

Try resetting cmos?
Try other connectors from power supply?
BIOS up to date on MB?
Try booting without GPU then shutdown and install and see if it'll detect it.

I have a feeling its my PSU. From what I've read online the 6970 needs two 8 pin PCIE power connectors to work. And upon further inspection of the GPU it has two slots 8 pin PCIE connectors. My PSU only has two 6 pin PCIE power connectors which is what i used with my old 6870. Is this the issue?

If I remember right the 6970 needs 8+6, does your PSU have the 2pin extension for the PCIe plugs?

Stupid me. Yep just connected the 4 extra pins meaning they're both 8 pin now. but still no display. Only get one beep now on startup so no problems there. I was using HDMI before with my old card. Now Im using a HDMI to DVI adapter for the 6970. Is this why Im not getting any display? or is it because of the driver and how Ive done the driver wrong?

Sometimes adapters don't get along. What I would is try to borrow a DVI cable with no adapter from a friend, or a HDMI cable (with no adapter).

1 Beep with AMI or Award BIOS means a successful POST. Sounds like your PC is working, and the cable has issues. If you leave it alone, does the PC attempt to boot into windows? Do you see disk activity?

problem is my monitor doesnt have a DVI output, only HDMI. I have a DVI monitor that Ill try. The Asus 6970 doesn't have HDMI inputs on the back unfortunately. i think my PC is fine, it sounds like it boots fine and the HDD is showing activity. just nothing on the screen.

I have a feeling its to do with the drivers. I have probably unistalled the old driver completely wrong. Surely if theres no driver the new 6970 wouldnt be able to display anything?

Do you see anything during post? If not its not drivers. Maybe input on monitor? Try not on auto but set what connection is.

Dont see anything during post. Nothing. just hear the one beep. my screen which is a Samsung searches through all the connections/inputs and just keeps searching. i think its the drivers as ive probs f*cked them up unistalling them. whats the correct method of unistalling and reinstalling new gpu drivers?

As Kenmitch says, if you don't even see the POST, it's something more basic than drivers. That's not to say the drivers necessarily are a-okay. But it's not relying on Windows or its drivers during POST.

Old card works fine with hdmi. Only difference with this card is im using a hdmi to dvi adaptor at the gpu end. really clueless as to what is wrong. power cables are now fine, pc beeps as normal on startup, everything else sounds as if its running fine, hdmi is connected to monitor. will come back to it tomorrow to see if i have any new ideas. cheers for the helpful replies guys.

I recall people having issues with some HDMI to DVI adapters.

I personally have not, as I've used a Blue jeans cable HDMI @ card end to DVI @ monitor end cable (25 feet long) on my 5770 and it worked fine, but I remember reading other people having issues.

You don't have a displayport cable or DVI cable? Maybe someone you could borrow one from?
This seems like a basic cabling issue of some sort.

My monitor only has a HDMI port. I could get a display port to hdmi cable but dont know if that would fix it. Yeh your right it does seem like a simple cable issue but I still dont know what. Even plugging in my other DVI monitor with a DVI cable didnt work though.

Just plugged in a HDTV and still no display, so I dont think its my monitor. Ive now put my old 6870 gpu in and connected it through the HDMI to DVI adaptor and thats working. So its not the adaptor. Just dont know what else to do. I read online about a guy with a similar problem with his 6970. He had to change the bios for the PCI/PCIE to dispaly only through the gpu and that sorted his problem. How can I check the bios? I guess Ill need to do this with my old gpu attached.

Try removing the card and tossing it into another computer. If you can't get it to post anywhere, it may just be DOA and you need to replace it.
