PCIe 1.x is shortly EOL and the least compelling reason to overhaul a system this late in the cycle. A high-end P4 'n' such doesn't need better than an X1950 Pro for gaming anyway and the price premium is insignificant and indeed less than the mobo and the hassle. I can see how it might suit some, but it would be a downgrade for many including meself. I mean, seriousry, assuming Intel chipset and a top-tier mobo, you would trade that reliability for VIA just to side-grade everything else?

Now if they would just release one that took a conroe, DDR1 and a *fully capable* PCI-E16x

It went out of stock today, unfortunately. :(

If I am not mistaken, there are some boards with a lower end intel chipset that supports PCI-E and DDR1, but no AGP support.

the asrock dualvista supports agp, pci-e, ddr1 and ddr2, as well as p4 and c2d, i used to own one, very nice board if you plan on going to a full end c2d gaming rig

I haven't been able to research that other board linked yet, but thats my problem with the asrock. Its AGP performance is fine, but it takes a hit with higher end pci-e video cards. I can't get behind the idea of plugging an expensive graphics card into a compromised pci-e slot.

This board is ideal if you want to upgrade one step at a time. I can live with the performance hit. Once I get
a PCI-E graphics card, then I will start looking for a motherboard upgrade. For $60, this not a bad board to
use as an interim step.

do we even use pci-e 4x bandwith?

bigsnyder has the right idea, its not about if we use the bandwidht or not, its for people who dont have the money to go out and buy a new board, ddr2, and a pci-e card, and cpu at once. i used it with a e6300 and a x1900 and ddr400, worked perfectly till i got my new board and ram.

I don't think the 8800s will work, however most have had success with the X1900s and X1950s.

Check this thread.
It is long, but there are some more recent posts concerning video card compatibilty.

PCI-E 4x is about the same as AGP4x I believe. It has more downstream (card to memory) bandwidth then AGP4x, since its synchronous. But graphics cards really don't make a lot of use of that of course. The testing I've seen seems to indicate that while AGP-8x hasn't been saturated, 4x has been with at least the higher end cards. Its kind of hard to get a perfect metric on that, since I think all AGP cards have required 8x since what...the FX series I guess?

Its kind of annoying that the 8800 series won't work with. Really, I just don't want to buy new ram...since there's really nothing wrong with DDR400. I'm aware I'm trying to have my cake and eat it too.

I'm just going to sit on my A64-X2 system for awhile since I continue to look at needing a new motherboard + ram + processor just for the processor upgrade.

What's the highest end PCI will support it?
Will $39 MOB do the right job?

And how it's does the job?
I'm thinking to use 478 P4 3.4GH PRESCOT and something nice PCIEx16 like
nVidia's Dx10 card-8800GTS(?????) but i can't find GPU support list.
Why it's so CHEAP if MOB works without any problems?

it ran it ok, i didnt have my x1900 runing up to 3d clock speeds, but it never gave me any major problems.

edit: but of course it was a single card setup.

This is a nice board, I'm considering to buy it, but I'm not sure cause it doesn't support Dual Channel which will hamper the performance greatly. Is a downgrade compared to my Asus P4P800-E Deluxe with PAT activated, but will allow me to use my P4, RAM and PCI-E x16 cards, does it worth the sacrifice? Good question indeed.
