Canadians Propose Legalizing Marijuana

DETROIT, 5:06 p.m. EDT September 6, 2002 - A new law could pave the way toward making marijuana use legal in Canada, which has officials in Michigan concerned, Local 4 reported Friday.

Canadian officials released a report recommending the legalization of marijuana.
The proposal would make it legal for anyone 16 years old or older to buy, use and grow marijuana for personal use.

In the report, a panel of lawmakers recommended the Canadian government regulate sales and production of marijuana, similar to the way cigarettes and beer are controlled.

Canadian officials are expected to vote on the proposal some time next year.

heh, sweet I'll be living in Bellingham, Washington (about a 40-50min drive to Vancover). That would be kinda nice, and if you think about it, the law makes perfect sense.

IMO, 16 years old is too young.

Yeh, I was thinking 18-21 myself as well. What's the legal age to smoke cigarettes in Canada?

I'm not entirely sure I support this legislation, but if they do decide to legalize MJ, I certainly hope they do so responsibly. 16 years old is preposterous.

Yeah it should be 19 like the rest...
It's not like it will stop the 16 year olds
Good point, let's lower the drinking age too!

Natually, you being the pothead would happily acquiesce and let children (yes, at 16 you are a child) toke it up.

edit: I was being a tad melodramatic.

Good point, let's lower the drinking age too! Hell, let's let children purchase firearms. I mean, if they really wanted a gun, they'd get one anyway.

Being the pothead, you would happily acquiesce and let children (yes, at 16 you are a CHILD) toke it up.

hehe, my thoughts exactly. by that logic it should be fine for a 16 year old KID to walk into the liquor store and walk out with a 40 of jack daniels

No, I have an idea. Let's have laws where a person who is responsible and graduated Magnacumlaude from a top tier engineering school at a ripe age of 20 not be able to go to a bar with his college buddies on graduation night because he has 8 more months to go till 21. That makes perfect sense to me.

Legal age to buy alcohol and cigarettes in Alberta is 18.

However, it is legal for a minor to smoke cigarettes, its just the transfer of the cigarettes to the minors and amongst the minors that is illegal.

Drinking is illegal under 18 though.

<edit> Rephrased it

Legal drinking age here in Alberta is 18, 18 to buy cigarettes, and its legal to smoke cigarettes at any age. Its only illegal to sell them to minors, give them to minors, or if your a minor, to give/sell them to anyone else.
That doesn't make much sense..

Oh, and it might be interesting to note, its easier for us minors to get weed than it is alcohol. Also MUCH cheaper. I won't say more because I don't really feel like a vacation, and no, I don't do weed. Just a fact.

I have no idea if its like this elsewhere...

Its illegal to drink before 18, however.
Basically, minors aren't allowed to get cigarettes, but if they do, they're allowed to smoke them.

Another reason MJ is more popular among high school kids is

1. Easly obtained
2. cheaper
3. easier to drive when those overprotected kids HAVE to get home by bedtime (not me)
4. Hard to get in trouble while high (no stupid Breath test crap, and they can't make you piss in a cup)

Least thats the reason I picked weed over beer (except the visits to frat parties ;))

So, what will border inspections consist of?

Questions? "You carrying, man?"

Sniffing dogs?

Random full body cavity searches?

If the legislation passes they'll probably have squads of dogs patrolling the lines of cars just like they do at the Mexico-US border.

Or maybe, in the face of the massive quantities of killer BC weed cascading across their northern border, US lawmakers will be forced to enact similar legislation.

Could happen...
