a dual g5 for 2200 doesnt sound that bad, may be even cheaper with a student discount

the new g5 core i think is suppose to scale to 3ghz(around there, but not sure) the old one(current) maxes out at 2.2 but ibm's redesign of the 970fx moves it to .09 soi, i think they call it the 975

130 nm = 970
90 nm = 970FX.

I suspect the 970FX will scale to 3 GHz, since the 2.6 GHz chip probably is only around 100 Watts max.

BTW, I'm not sure I believe that a dual 2 GHz will be $2500, because I'm predicting a 2.3-2.4 GHz dual for that price. We'll find out soon enough... either tomorrow or in 3 weeks at WWDC.

Could be a step backward. The problem with making a 2GB DIMM? If it's got eight chips on it, then they're 2Gb each. We're not likely to see 2Gb RAM chips anytime soon. I think the largest is 512Mb. Hence, 512Mb x 16 = 8192Mb / 8 = 1GB DIMM.

I've seen an Infineon 2 GB DIMM advertised, but it's only been ECC (which the G5 Power Mac can't use), and it costs $950 per stick. Ouch!

It could be used in the G5 Xserve though, for a cool 16 GB per server. Only $7600 for memory...

Crucial has 4GB DIMMS.

The G5 doesn't use ECC? That's horrendous! ALL workstations should have ECC. No excuses.

No new G5s yet, probably a few more weeks? Then another couple months until they ship. J/K
