New APC Battery UPS not working????

yadda

Senior member
I just bought a APC BackupUPS 550G a few months ago and and I just just lost power to everything in my house and the desktop PC I have plugged into into the UPS also went down. What am I missing?? I have the USB cable plugged into the UPS from the desktop. Probably something stupid???

Thanks for any suggestions.

Did you plug the computer into one of the right plugs? Not all the plugs provide backup power.

Did you plug the battery in when you first got the UPS? Normally I'd expect it to scream at you if you didn't, but I could be wrong.

BackUPS 550G? As in, 550VA? That's probably only 300W. Do you have a high-end PC? Or just an ordinary "office" PC?

My guess is, the UPS isn't sized properly. Or it's more than 3 years old, and the battery needs replacing.

If you let the UPS stay plugged in for a few hours, then unplug it, does it stay on?

Then, try that with a small load, like a desk lamp, or something.

If the battery is bad (and was not detected as such), it should seem fine with no load, but drop quickly with a small load.

If the small load is OK, then, after it think it has charged up, try unplugging it with the PC on, just sitting at the desktop, or in the firmware interface, and see what happens.

If your PC's PSU has too low a hold-up time, there could be problems. Mine, by reviews, doesn't quite meet ATX requirements, FI. The UPS generally takes several milliseconds to swap to battery, anywhere from 4ms to 12ms seeming to be common. If it takes 10ms, but your PC can only hold out for 8ms, then there goes the PC, even with a fully functioning UPS.

Have you tested the UPS, before now?

Uggg..I believe Ken is right.. I just noticed that some of the outlets have Battery backup enabled symbols on them.

Where is my embarrassed emoticon??!!!

Thanks

I need to see if I can dig up the picture, but we had a client with a UPS plugged into one plug on the outlet and a power strip plugged into the other plug with all the equipment plugged into the power strip.
