technically, no. I told the rep that home at 40% off and I wanted to beat that price. Then I haggled.

It is really based on the same price I posted previously. The only changes was a downgrade in ram from 1 gig to 256k (which took down the price $450) and a drop from 4 years to 3 years (dropped it $310).

so is it a good price?

Wow! That seems like a great price to me. How did you get that? You just called up a Dell sales rep and said you wanted better than 40% off? Was it really that easy? If so, I might have to do that! :D

How the heck did you get a price that good? I just spoke with a Dell rep on the phone, and he said that he couldn't do much for me...that my best bet was to go with my education discount. The best I could get was around $1400 shipped with taxes! What's your secret man? :D

Really wasn't a secret. Call different sales people. Some are better and more flexable than others.

Also, from my experience, the business people seem to negotiate more than the home sales.

My laptop is already being boxed!!! :D

Good luck all.

If you order systems through Dell Small Business, do they have to be declared for business purposes?

really not sure. I order it through my company so i can claim it as either (if I want to buy from home or small business).

Now I'm torn between trying to haggle and just using the coupon I had online... but, damn. That system is better than the one I had, with a better warranty, AND $200 cheaper.

What rep did you talk to? Did they ask you if it was personal or for business?

My family does run a small business, I just might try this.

I did not use him this time but a guy name Cary is actually pretty good. But, I have his extention at work and do not know it now. Will post it tomorrow.

Oh, just to let you know, tell them "I am ready to buy now but need a little better deal".

They will do it since it is the end of the quater this month.

That would be awesome, thanks. One more thing, did you build it online and then call, or call and tell them what you want?

His info is:

Cary Vanderpoel
Dell Inc
Business Account Specialist
Toll Free: 800.879.3355 ext. 7289518

I would have built it online but I wanted a 7200 rpm hard drive which was not availble online. Home sales couldn't do it. APparnetly, only business sales can do it so I ordered through them.

Let him know that Adam sent ya.

Oh, I just wanted to add, I heard the 40% off coupon is done. If that is true then you might be SOL. Most of the reps will slightly beat current deals so you have to start your negotations off a live coupon. You can try the 40% off but since it is expired, they may not want to base a quote off of it.

Either way, good luck and let me know how it goes.

Thanks. I called and left a message. We'll see what happens. According to the place I found my $750 off of $1899 coupon, the 40% off coupon is good until tomorrow.

EDIT: For some reason, the board was censoring my URL. Here's where I found the coupon:

http://tinyurl.com/53o5j

EDIT2: I just tried the coupon at Dell Home, and it did still work. If I don't get ahold of Cary buy this afternoon, I'll probably just go with that coupon.

No go. :(

Cary said he needed his manager's approval to match the Dell Home 40% discount, and he couldn't get it. I bargained a little bit, but I wasn't able to get that initial price break, and I didn't think it was really worth pursuing without that.

I started out with the config you got, and then lowered it to a 1.8 GHz CPU with only a two year warranty, and the best he would give me was $1500. Now that I think about, I didn't mention your name. Maybe that would've made a difference. Maybe my bargaining skillz just aren't as l33t as yours. I don't know.

Oh, well. I might try getting ahold of another rep, I might not. I'll have to think for a bit.

Thanks for helping, though.

EDIT: Fixed a couple of stupid typos.

Did you actually place the order? If no, and if you want, I could probaly order a second system at the same price.

No, I didn't place the order.

If you could get an identical system for the same price, that would be great. My dad (and myself, to a lesser degree) is a bit paranoid about buying high-dollar items over the internet, though. I'd have to talk to him.

How would you handle payment and shipping?

I guess I could take a check or something but I am not sure how we would handle the warranty.

If you can think of some ideas I would be open to helping you out.

I didn't ask if the Business Mobility warranty is in the name of the company or not. I did tell Cary that the laptop would be for personal use, and he said that the Business Mobility warranty was available in any case. You might be able to say that the laptop is being purchased for a friend, and needs to be in the owner's name, not the company's.

You might also tell them that the owner would like to pay for it with his own credit card. Could you try asking them that? I'd much prefer being able to pay Dell directly with a credit card, and get the warranty in my name.

Of course, I didn't see a "not for resale" item on your list you posted, so you might be able to resell it to me and properly transfer the warranty. What state do you live in? I wouldn't want to have to pay another round of sales tax.

If I could be sure that warranty stuff wouldn't have to go through his company, that just might work.

EDIT: argoldst, I PMed you.
