I was looking at the new AMD 7750 BE Kuma as an upgrade to my son's machine (AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000 3.1 gig Not Windsor core). The motherboard is an ECS 8200A Black Edition.

But according to Toms Hardware the 7750 is slower the 6000 and 6400

In almost every review that I have seen the X2 7750 BE easily beats the X2 6000+ Windsor, especially in games where the difference is significant. Review: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardwa...750-7550-cpus-review/9

I don't see it as a worthwhile upgrade from a X2 6000+ however. Maybe wait for 45nm CPUs to come down in price or 45nm duals to appear and then consider upgrading to one of those. Certainly if you are willing to spend $120 on a X3 710 that would be a significant upgrade compared to what he has now.

Is there any real need to upgrade though? What does he do that a 6000+ can't do?

When Kuma came out, most reviews showed 7750BE was a bit faster than the top X2's. Don't know what TH's problem is. As Extelleron says, an PhII X3 would be a much better solution.

Hmm, why did they use 2 different AM2+ mobos, using 2 different southbridge chips?

Because with every passing day, Tom's loses more of whatever shred of credibility it has left. I was reading an AM2+/AM3 PII review and was just  at literally tearing a pin out of an AM2+ X4 to see if it would work in an AM3 board because "the silicon is the same." Sure, the die might be the same, but what the hell made them think that AMD would even bother with the DDR3 pinout on a chip that will never use it?

The Athlon X2 7750 is better than an X2 6000 in most tasks and I don't know why Toms shows differently. However the performance difference is very minimal without overclocking, and there still isn't much of a difference when overclocked especially if your X2 7750 is an overclocking dud like mine. Personally if I were you I'd wait for the 45nm Athlon X2 in June which will be even faster clock for clock or grab an X3 710 right now.

Xbitlabs review: Kuma 7750BE "Phenom X2"

Note that's a Phenom I X2 if you look closely. Meaning hot, high power consumption and equal to somewhat better performance than the X2 6000 in games (read the review for specifics on all these points - especially power consumption).

Depending on your motherboard I would recommend the newer PhII X3 710 instead.

Tomshardware is driving through the corn field for some time now. I started to ignore them ever since they weren't able to overclock the i7 cpus. Every hardware site managed to overclock those chips, but Tomshardware ran into some "issues". I don't know what is wrong with them.
