The Raptor may not be the best buy due to the minimal speed difference between is and a larger 7200 RPM drive, but other than that, it sounds like you're going to be a happy camper.:)

Get a 3000+ or 3200+ 90nm CPU. They should have roughly the same oc ceiling as the 90nm 3500+ and cost a lot less, you'll just be running a higher FSB/HTT speed to get there, and if that RAM is worth the money it should be able to keep up the pace. You might lose some latency but you'll gain bandwidth.

I thought raptors were really fast, much more then say a 200 gig sata baracuda from seagate. Was I wrong?...because I am not rich and I dont want to spend the extra doe if i dont need to. The Seagate baracuda is 129 the raptor is 182 and a 25 dollar rebate.

old rig...
P4 3gig pressy--hot mofo of a chip
1 gig corsair xms
ATi x800 PRO
80 gig ide wd
asus p4c800e deluxe mobo

I didnt like that system so i sold it and this is what im buying now :p

If you want the fastest hd, get a 15k scsi + an LSIU160 adapter ($40)

Well if 70gigs is enough for you then I'd keep the raptor or else like the other poster said get a 7200rpm drive. I think a very good one is the Seagate 160g sata2 drive:

http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=22-148-034&depa=0

BTW Scsi is not expensive, you can get a 10k4 36g for $129.

I'd take a good look at this case:

http://www.computernerd.com/ycc-61f1.html for $145 great cooling 120mm fans or this case

http://store.yahoo.com/directron/cslx6a19.html for $39 also w/ 2 - 120mm fans

Regards,
Jose

IMHO, the Raptor is well worth the money. I switched from a raid0 (2 hitachi 7200rpm drives) and did notice a real speed improvement.

Most of the time it's case fans that make all the noise. That's why I linked to 2 case's, because they have 120mm fans that spin slower than 80mm fans.
I had a Lian-Li case that screamed w/ it's 3 small 80cm fans. It got too annoying, so I replaced it w/ the Compucase I linked to. And now it's very quiet.

Also the 120mm fans really cool better than 80mm fans.

Good Luck,
Jose

Its a nice system, and if you OC to 2.6 ghz, it will be much better. Hate to say it though, mine is only an 8/10, and I would rate yours at 6/10, 7/10 if you OC. And I didn;t look at the case that weel, it would kill you in the noise department.... My Lian-Li is quiet, but run hot, unless I use enough fans to make it not quiet, then it runs cool.

But it is a nice system, don't get me wrong !!!!

Also what is the point of recommending scsi to someone? if they havent though about scsi, they woulndt benefit from it, since they would have known of the extreme hard drive dependency for their usage already.

...Besides WD74 is faster than many 10k scsi drives. Review
