New AM3 Motherboard general purpose

Looking for a motherboard for general purpose work. No game playing or overclocking. Looking at one of the following AMD CPUs: Athlon II X4 630, Athlon II X2 250, Athlon II X4 620.

Looking at possibly Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P or an Asus motherboard. Will be using Win7 and probably 4GB RAM (even though 2GB would probably be ok).

Just skittish from my last build for someone. Used a Gigabyte P55A-UD3 and i5-750 it was frustrating build. Possibly due in part to XMS3 memory and BIOS problem.

Getting very frustrated in trying to match motherbard, CPU and memory since my last build was one of the most frustrating builds I have had. That experience has made me very skittish buying parts and making a mistake in part selection from out of town NCIX and having to eat the restocking fee/frieght.

I may just go to a big box store and buy an off the shelf computer. That is not normally the way I approach new computers in past. I have built all of my boxes in the past.

i honestly don't get what's so frustrating for you.

pick a CPU that's the same socket as the mobo. pick memory that's the same standard as the mobo.

AMD 770 has no integrated graphics. It is similar to the P55 chipset. All you get is a PCIe/Hypertransport router.

If you need integrated graphics, go with the 785G.

If you have built all your computers in the past you should realize that it's usually the way to go. Sure, 1/100 times you need to send something back. It doesn't happen every time. Posting on anandtech will at least ensure that you order the right parts and don't have to get anything restocked.

All Athlon IIs contain a DDR3 controller. The GA-MA770T is am AM3 board with DDR3 DIMM slots. So just get yourself a cheap set of crucial/corsair DDR3 and have at it.

hmm... if he's not playing games, why not go integrated?

i guess he didn't mention it one way or another. maybe he has an old card he'd like to use. i dont want him to get a $90+ 785G board if he doesn't need it. I think the MA770T is like $60 or around there.

using a separate video card is an additional wattage requirement...

besides, there's cheap 780/785 boards.

to the OP: you might consider the athlon 2 X3... forget model name.

anyways, it's 2.9 ghz (vs 2.6 ghz) and $20 less.

Is there any advantage for what this computer is being used for to get the Athlon II x4 630 vs the x2 250?

Looking at also using:

Kingston ValueRAM KVR1333D3N9K2/4G PC3-10666 4GB 2X2GB DDR3-1333 CL9 240PIN DIMM Memory Kit (because the GA-MA770T-UD3P is on the kingston compat list)

Antec Truepower New 650W Modular Power Supply ATX12V V2.3 Active PFC 80 Plus SLI Ready 120MM PWM Fan

Antec Three Hundred Mini TRower Gaming Case

eVGA E-Gefore 9600GSO video card

don't buy that video card or that powersupply. use the onboard video included with the 785G (you should get the 785) motherboard as fayd suggested.

Get something more in the 400w range. The Athlon II 250 is ok, but as he also pointed out, a tri-core processor would be better for what your system is doing. Even a lower-frequency tri-core would be better. There is a 2.7 GHz Athlon II X3 425 for $95 at ncix.

Ok if I get the

Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AMD785G mATX AM3 PCI-E DDR3 Video Sound GLAN CrossFireX HDMI Motherboard and either

AMD Athlon II X3 425 Triple Core Processor Socket AM3 2.7GHZ 1.5MB Cache 95W Retail Box or

AMD Athlon II X3 435 Triple Core Processor Socket AM3 2.9GHZ 1.5MB Cache 95W Retail Box

Will I be able to run the Virtual Mode in Windows7 Pro on this motherboard (BIOS is capable) and either CPU supports AMD-V??

both of the CPUs and the Mobo support virtualization.
