Oy - Trailer in link.

Max Payne developer Remedy Entertainment has issued a new trailer and screenshots from its psychological action-adventure effort Alan Wake (PC, 360).

The studio has yet to say when the project will be released, though it was first unveiled in 2005. Upon its eventual arrival, Microsoft will publish.

"We're working hard on Alan Wake and want to make sure it meets and exceeds the awesome potential," Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrinne noted today. "It's still time to focus and we won't be doing constant updates on the progress."

"Naturally, we'll be happy to share and show more about Alan Wake when we have the next live showing of the game," added Myllyrinne.

And the next one will be the first!

Does anyone know of any examples where an extremely long development cycle actually turned out a good game that wasn't a disappointment? Specifically, when the release date gets pushed so far back that it's year(s) later...

Blizzard seems to be the exception because they don't announce a release date until they're absolutely sure they can make it - and they never really state exactly when development began. Plus, they're not afraid to just cancel development...

Prey was one.

Never played anything other than the demo, but I thought that game was something of a let down...

It certainly pioneered an interesting concept, but I think it actually took Valve to deliver on the original promise with their own game, Portal.

I was excited for this game when it was first unveiled with the Intel tech demo, but after three years, with an unknown amount of time left to tack on, I think the hype is going to far overshadow the actual experience, unless they come up with something revolutionary. I'm still looking forward to see how this turns out, but my initial hope and excitement has died down considerably to a level of mere curiosity.
