Today I went to my local sam's club at big bend and 44 in st louis, and saw this TV is on clearance for $1999.81. (The price ends in 1 is for clearance) Even though the online review is not very good, the price is hot especially considering that some of LCD and DLP projection TV are selling at this price.
The model number for this TV is PDP5016H, which could be the same as PDP5006H at costco.

Here is review for PDP5006H: http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatvreviews/akai_plasma_review.html

How much is a Sam's Club membership? For a $2000 tv, I don't think an extra $40 is going to kill you.

I got the maxent MX-50X3 from Best Buy for $2222 when there was a 10% coupon floating around. Especially for the price, I'm VERY happy with it so far. (had it a month)

Same. I LOVE mine so far and it's been great. I also just got back my $200 GC and $135 in RewardZone certificates!

I have the Vizio P50HD 50" Plasma and I bought it from CostCo. Their return policy beats any other store out there, which is 100% satisfaction guarantee or your money back. It put me back $2,718.74 after taxes. But I can definitely sleep better at night knowing if it decides to fall apart after 6 months or so I have the return policy in my favor!

Not to mention the Vizio 50" got rave reviews over at AVS forums. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=543988

Hmmm I think is a pretty hot deal. Problem is in a year this size and type of a TV will be probably under $1500..or less. Maybe not.. Technology is always going to get cheaper, but at what rate of depreciation are we willing to deal with when making this big a purchase? I watch about 10 hours of TV a week on average.. 520 hours a year, so about $4 a day(factor in interest) if I only have this TV for a year..

my 45" Sharp Aquos LCD will do 1080P if you bypass through the AVC and use the panel's DVI input (with a PC)

So don't buy anything. Wait for SED or some other technology to come around. And don't buy that either cause it'll be too high a price in the beginning. You can have my 32" lcd in several months or maybe this guys plasma at deep discounts so we can upgrade at a cheap price. Come on, you gotta buy sometime and if you got the bucks, this looks like a good deal.

Sounds like POS from your link

produces an almost passable picture, but has severe weaknesses in some areas of picture quality, internal processing, and operational efficiency.

My Sam's Club had the Akai 50" next to the Samsung 50" plasma and it was no contest. The Samsung simple wiped the floor with the Akai in both color and clarity! Of course, the Samsung was $1000 bucks more, so you get what you pay for.

Same at my Sam's club, IMO the Akai is cr*p, even the EDTV panasonic looked better.

I dont understand whos spending 2+ grand on a television set that isnt sony, samsung, panasonic etc..

Well even just sony or samsung. Go to a store, look at a Akai or some other company you probably never
heard of a year ago and compare the picture to a better company. Its not even close.

I would take a good looking 42 inch over a terrible 50 inch any day. Hell I would even take a 32 over a 50
after seeing the picture of some of the cheap plasmas.

Not that I'm promoting Akai in any way, but it?s been in business longer then Sony - a real brand name overseas, just not in the US.

I picked up an Akai 50" DLP from Costco (from Santa :) for almost $500 less then the other comp DLPs. They blow off the shelves in one week at the two Costco in my area. I'm very pleased with the unit compared to my old TV, but have to caveat that w/ still in the process of swapping out the standard Dish network box with a HD unit (so expecting to see a quantum leap in the already very good picture quality).

Bonus - if the flat screen LCD's or plasmas come down in price in under a year - I'll swap it out with Costco's great return policy :)

If people keep pulling sh!t like this, they will change the Costco return policy.
