New Age "Toxin" Science

Lately, I've noticed an increase in the number of people that I know that buy into this new age toxin rhetoric that I see in print and on TV. You know, those "nutritionists" that try to sell you Supreme Greens claiming it will correct the pH imbalance in your body that causes you all your ills. I was wondering how many of you out there believe in this toxin science? What say you?

Here are my examples:

My sister used to be big into the toxin notion. She believed that every illness that she experienced was due to toxins in her body caused by modernity. She also took special medication that was supposed to cleanse her body of these toxins. These books that she read also contributed to her mistrust and dislike of western medicine. I'm not saying that our medical system is perfect, it is most certainly flawed, but I would rather see a real doctor and get real medicine as opposed to believing some of these "experts" that write these books. My sister has since gotten pregnant and has once again put most of her trust into modern medicine.

My aunt is pretty far out there as far as these toxins go. She's far enough out that she bought this box looking device that's supposed to transmit radio waves. The box comes with a book that tells you what frequency the waves should be at to kill the organisms causing your sickness. Her "healer" told her that the organisms are not bacteria but yeast. So now whenever she isn't feeling well, she looks up her symptoms in this book and grabs these two copper pipes that are attached to this box with wires and tries to kill the yeast. It reminds me of a scene that should be in Napoleon Dynamite. She usually flip flops between this radio wave nonsense and cleansing her body of toxins. She can never say what these toxins actually are, just that they exist. Now, I've actually lysed bacteria and I can tell you it's certainly not as easy as just bombarding them with radio waves coming from a machine powered by a 9V battery. However, any attempt to use rational thought to convince her she's being scammed inevitably makes me part of the conspiracy of western medicine.

What are your experiences?

personally, I think it's bullsh!t

I do know people who believe it though. As they are on to some other miracle cure every other year, I use them an indicator of what the newest useless health fad is.

Miss Information says I need to get rid of the Toxins.

She also tells me to use Cherokee hair tampons.

Agreed. This "toxin" mumbo jumbo has been around for thousands of years, albeit now the praticioners of such are throwing around scientific words and concepts to make it seem more legitimate to the masses. Most of these remedies don't work at all, and sometimes they do "work"- but only as well as placebos.

Pff, toxins. Can you believe these idiots haven't realized the healing power of crystals?

If they could actually tell me what these "toxins" really are, I might listen.

I'm for whatever works, regardless if it new age science, witchcraft or modern medicine. In many cases, it seems that people can cure themselves of minor ailments by believing that they can (placebo effect).

I would never turn my back on modern medicine, but I will use some alternative treatments (accupuncture, naturalpathic remedies, change in diet) in addition to the western medicine approach.

I agree. Obviously, I think the whole toxin stuff is BS. My favorite class in my undergrad days was biochemistry.

However, I think people do have the mentality that medicine can solve all their problems. A good diet and exercise program should come first. I get tired of all these diet pill commercials on TV. If you want to lose weight, use more calories than you consume. Seems easy enough.
