New Adobe Flash Beta (64 bit included)

I'm using it and so far, so good. Finally, a new, native 64-bit version since November of last year.

Adobe is so behind with 64 bit. Reader still doesn't support thumbnail previews with 64 bit.

I think he's referring to Adobe Reader, not Google Reader, and the preview thumbnails for PDF's.

Well, I just built my first Linux Box, so I would be forced to learn it. Its an AMD E-350 with Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. I installed the flash 11 beta version for 64bit Linux, and I have to say, it runs like balls in chrome, and even worse in FF. On my windows partition, flash vids in youtube are silky smooth, but in order to achieve "kinda" smooth in Ubuntu, I have to go 480/720p in chrome, and with FF, forget about it, even 360p drops frames.

I have the 11.6 catalyst installed as well for the GPU. I know the E-350 isn't a speed demon, but 1080p flash should not be a prob given hardware acceleration. I'm guessing the drivers still have a long ways to go.

However, I did switch Youtube to HTML5 to test that, and it was no better as well.

I'm such a noob to Linux though, I wouldn't rule out something I messed up.

I just copied the libflash file to the proper directorys for Chrome and FF. I can't remember the URL, but there was a site I went to with each browser that verified that I had flash v11 something.

I can provide more details when I get home to my linux system if you need them. At his point, I just think its a crappy Linux driver issue more than anything, as it pegs my APU when it any flash runs. Runs smooth in Win, however, but thats flash 10.3 I think.

That doesn't sound right at all. Most have had nothing but good to say about the native 64-bit versions of flash. Personally think that 11 beta is the best yet.


Lets troubleshoot your flash issue:

Did you install "Ubuntu Restricted Extras" from the software center? If so, you will have to go back to the software center and search for "flash" and remove the "adobe flash plugin."

After that, the only place you need to place the flash file is in 'usr/lib/mozilla/plugins' and restart your browsers. To verify which version of flash you have in Firefox or Chrome, just type 'aboutlugins' into the url bar.

I hope this helps. Its just odd that flash runs so badly on your macine...

Wait, do they have flash for Linux now? This is one of the things keeping me from switching. As much as I hate flash like the next guy, I have to deal with the fact that so many sites need it.
