ok everyone, i'm feeling pretty anxious to upgrade - the months of restraint is starting to ware me out. i'm definitely going a64 to keep up with things. preferably 939 for the agp/pci lock for those much higher overclocking possibilities.. but money comes to mind. 754 has similar performance results for a cheaper price. i'm just not sure whether or not spending the extra cash now for future agp/pci lock boards is worth it in the long run for the 939's.

ok so if people could answer that question - blog if needed - i'm all ears.

also, if you decide on either 939 or 754: mobo, memory, and cpu model suggestions would be much appreciated.

good luck.

Correction....

The Nforce 250 boards. ;)

if you wanna be even more anal... the nforce3 250 boards!

:)

....

anyway... i just got myself an Epox 8kda3j (so many random letters) which is based on the nforce3 250 chipset but i haven't tested it yet :)

the best ram with A64's seem to be either any sort of bh-5 ram or the ocz EB series ram...

as for mobo, the epox looks good as well as the gigabyte nforce3 250 board as well...

The choice of 754 vs 939 would probably depend most of my price point, and how long I planned to keep the system. Therefore, here are the two scenario's I'd most likely consider:

1 - 754 System "value":
A64 2800+
MSI Neo Platinum
WD 74BG Raptor
1X 1GB Ram, maybe 2X 512 depending on cost (would need to check MSI page to ensure compatibility with MB)
NV 6800GT

2 - 939 System
A64 3500+
ABIT A8V
WD 74GB Raptor
2X 512
NV 6800GT

In both cases I'd pick the least expensive processor available, with the goal to upgrade later. I know that with 754 you'd be able to get at least a 3700+, so maybe in a year or two that would be a good upgrade at a low price.

939 gives you a larger potential upgrade path on the CPU side, but with an AGP port, I wonder how many video upgrades will be available a year or two down the road. Also, there are very few 939 MB's available, and most are pretty expensive.

Personally, I think if I was buying now, I'd probably go with the 754 system. If I could wait till December or so, I'd try to get a 939 with PCIe support (I will personally be waiting til December and then hopefully go with a 939 and PCIe and a 0.09um A94).
