Hey, I've been "out of touch" for a little while, and I just want to know what are some of the best video cards out right now ~$130 or less for a friend building a new PC. The 7600GT seems to be out of this price range, but the 7600GS seems to be in it. Other than that, I was looking at the X1600 Pro and what I have now, the 6600GT. So basically, he wants something that performs on par with or better than my current rig, so which of these cards would best fit the bill (literally), or is there something else I didn't mention here that would be better?

Oh, and if it wasn't obvious, it has to be PCIe.

alrighty then ;)

ur best bet is prolly gonna be THIS. Connect3d Radeon x800GTO. if he had enough for the 7600gt then i would go with that but this is the next best thing.

however u MIGHT be able to scrounge the forums and find a x800xl for 130-140. maybe even a x800gto2. lookin around the FS/FT forums wouldnt hurt. but if all else fails then the x800gto is gonna be faster than the 6600gt and the 7600gs by a good bit (higher clocks, 256-bit interface, 256mb o RAM.) hope this helps some.

*EDIT* as an added bonus the connect3d's have about a 50% unlocking rate, which means that 50% of the time u can use Rivatuner to unlock all 16 pipes and 6 vertex shaders. making it a full fledged x800xl, if u OC it u can make it a x800xt or higher. just FYI

Sorry, I can't go with refurbs...

Anyway, between the two, which is better, the 6600GT or the 7600GS? And is the 7600GS having any problems?

that is a great card, and he wont be dissapointed with it. at that price point u gotta love it. and yep they all have 128 bit buses as do all 6600gt's ;) course the 6600gt's only have 8 pixel pipes where as the 7600gs has 12. this is gonna provide a higher fill rate and overall much better performance, especially since they both have similar clocks.

if he cares about noise get the second one, if not then dont. the first one is cheaper anyways AND its faster

Definitively you should get the first one, it's fillrate is 6,600MP/s against the second one that's having only 4800MP/s. It would hurt badly when the Anti Aliasing is on. Don't think that the fan is gonna be noisy, specially in this mainstream type cards. That is an issue in the high end cards only (cough *X1900XTX* cough)

The 7600GS is 10~20% faster than the 6600GT with newer features like TRAA, better HDR efficeny, fixed pure video etc.
The card performs similarly with the X1600XT while it beats the X1600pro.

The clock differences wont be that great in terms of performance. The 7600GS stock is 400, while it may vary between venders (normally 400~500).

I was considering getting a 7600GS for my empty shuttle case. it looks like a decent card with a good performance/money ratio. Id get the silent version peronally, deffinately worth a little extra cash in my oppinion.

Dont bother with the X800, while its a fast card it does not support all the DX9 features that the 7600 does.

If you get the passively cooled card, make sure your friend has decent case airflow. My friend had a x300se HM, and you'd be surpprised how hot the passive cooler got on that puny card.

I'm selling myHIS X850XT (has the Arctic Silencer stock) for $150 in the Buy/Sell section. If "advertising" isn't allowed here, I'll remove my post.
