New 8800GTS won't boot - is it a power issue?

Hey guys,
I just upgraded from a 7900GT to a BFG 8800GTS 512, and I can't get the thing to boot. Here are my other components.

MSI MB (bought it 2 years ago, exact model escapes me).
A64 4200 X2
2GB DDR800
a SATA drive and 2 IDE drives
PSU is an Antec TruePower 2.0 430, with 2 12V rails at 17A each, max is listed as 31A on the PSU.

I can't get this thing to boot. I was able to get it to boot to BIOS once, but it locked before it would even enter the BIOS setup, and now it won't even send a signal to the monitor. My 7900GT works fine when replacing the 8800. Does this sound like a power issue, or a bum card? Thanks for your help!

First thing to do would be to reseat the card. Pull it out and put it back in, making sure any tabs that need to snap do.

Then, listen to everyone around here.

Did that. A few times, actually. No go. I feel like this PSU should at least have enough power to boot with the card.

That PSU should handle the card if you say it has 31 Amps on the 12 V rails, although I would get a new one. I guess you probably need to do a bios flash on the motherboard. I remember there were some motherboards that had difficulties with PCI-E 2.0 cards, but a new bios fixed that right away.

Good advice. There are a few boards out there that don't know what to do with PCIe 2.0 until you flash the BIOS.

Although it does concern me that you were able to get to the BIOS and then couldn't the next time. A problem like this, unless we're talking about defective hardware, should be more consistant.

As far as the PSU goes, I would replace it when you have the money because it's time, but if it was able to run a 7900 GT, it should AT LEAST be able to post with a 8800 GTS.

I flashed the BIOS last night, and will try the card when I get home. Thanks for the advice - will report back in an hour or so when I try 🙂

Flash seems to have worked. After that, posted no problem, and have had no problems in games thus far. Thanks guys!
