New 8800GT failing to POST....any tips please

Got an MSI 8800GT. Installed it into the PC but it fails to bring up anything on screen, failing to POST. Reboot seems to be going in circles due to CD/DVD drives going on and off. Following has been tried:

- Bought a new Seasonic 550watt PSU
- Tried the graphics card in another PC, works
- Updated BIOS
- Unplugged everything except the essentials
- Checked, checked, checked

I place the old 6800GS back in, everything works perfectly again.

I have a feeling it has something to do with trying to use slightly older tech with new tech.

Specs:
Asus A8N-SE (VIA chipset)
Opteron 175 (stock)
2GB Mushkin RAM
Soundblaster Audigy 2 (removed for testing)

I consider myself good at troubleshooting and relatively tech savvy, but this one's got me stumped. Any advise would be much appreciated. 🙂

Couple of questions:

Does your power supply have it's own six pin PCI-E power connectors? More than one? If yes, did you try each of them?

Did your card ship with a molex to six pin PCI-E power adapter? If so, try using that adapter to power the card. It looks similar to this and you only need to use one of the molex's.

I had a similar issue after I installed a 8800gt. My PC would make the CD/DVD drives go on and off for about 20 seconds after I turn it on, but then it continued to boot anyways. This was when I had my mobo in SLI mode, with each pci-e slot divided into 8 lanes. Then I switched my mobo into single-card mode, giving the primary pci-e slot 16 lanes, and the machine boots normally now.
