New 7800GT + Enermax EG465P-VE Power Supply

I have a system that I recently upgraded with a ECS nFORCE4-A754 mobo and a EVGA 7800GT PCIe card. System is powered with the Enermax mentioned above.

I got one of those 2Molex to PCIe Power connecters, but when I hook everything up, press power, the fan on my mobo stutters for a second, but the system doesn't power on.

Experimenting I unplugged the PCIe card from the power connector and the system powered on (obivously it didn't go beyond that).

So is this the power supply? It's a ATX 1.3, but from the FAQs I've read here, that shouldn't be a problem. The manual says that this mother board "should" work ok with a 20-pin connector.

I'm hoping I don't need another power supply, the +12V rail on this PSU has 33A which I think is higher than average.

I tried connecting the molex connectors to different lines coming from the PSU, no luck there. Since I don't have another video card to test with I can't elliminate the possibility that the motherboard is bad, but if I pull out the video card the motherboard beeps (1 long, 2 short) when powering up. Leading me to believe it's just not getting enough juice.

Will take the video card to work and have IT check it out there.

Any suggestions/confirmations appreciated.

Well it shoudl work. When you plug in 2 molexes to the PCIe power connector, do you use 2 seperate lines, or are you trying to use 2 connectors from the same line(which you shouldn't be). Have you tried leaving the video card plugged in, but disconnecting the hard drives, and CD/DVD drives? Are you sure you have the 4pin 12v atx connector plugged in?

THanks for the response Stevty...

Yes, I've tried different lines from the PSU with the 2 molexes, tried every combination I can come up with.
Yes, I tried unplugging everything but the video card (no drives) to see if I could get it to power on and post.
and yes the 4pin 12v connector is plugged in securely to the mobo.

I brought my new video card into work, slapped it into my Dell XPS loaded up and played Oblivion for 30 minutes, so we can elliminate the video card which leads me to believe it's either the PSU or the motherboard.

If it's the mobo that means I gotta take it back to frys and deal with them hooking up the board getting it to post and not letting me do an exchange at first. (lots of argueing, fun fun), if it's the PSU well that's another $100 I'd rather not spend. From some of the messages i've read it seems like this PSU can handle what i'm throwing at it, but maybe not.

Thanks again,
A.

Don't need a $100 psu to power a 7800GT, it will run nicely on a 400w Fortron for $40. The 6800GT used more power than the 7800GT and it ran just fine on my 350w Enermax. Might want to see if you can borrow a lower end video card that doesn't require an extra power connector to help isolate the problem. I don't really think your PSU is the problem, it should handle that system very easily.

Just be sure to try with the bare minimums. 1 stick of ram, video card, CPU/heatsink and fan. Disconnect hard drives, CD/DVD drives, any other pci cards, etc. Also try the same thing with the motherboard outside of the case, as a loose screw, or a standoff thats out of place could also cause the problem you are getting. Also I didn't look it up for your motherboard, but I believe the 1 long followed by 2 short beeps is generaly memory related, so if you have more than 1 stick of ram, try each stick individualy.

Update for you Stevty:

Yes, it was the power supply, I went to Frys and found an open box Enermax 535w (can't recall the model number, but came with a big green storage bag for all my computer crap, nice) at a reasonable price, installed it, had to make some adjustments on the PCIe plugs (one of the molex pins was square instead of rounded at one end, no idea why, but have much "coaxing" got it connected and it worked just fine, manufacturing defect?), but once connected it powered up and I was running around Oblivion in beautiful Ultra Mode in no time.

Thanks for your help and responses,
Andy...
