Durons will have the performance edge, but Celerons wil probably snatch unknowing customers away simply because they're 33/66MHz faster than the fastest Duron available now(Duron 700MHz). Besides, there still aren't any pre-built systems with Durons in them, AFAIK...

The new 733s and 766s probably won't make it to 1.1GHz and 1.15GHz respectively, so even the older Celerons will have the performance edge when overclocked.

Goi: Note that these new Celerons are out in Japan only. By the time they arrive, I bet Duron 750 will be already widely available.

Exactly what I expected.

Wasn't the cc0 stepping the one used for the P3 1.13? I hope the problems with the 1.13 were not in the stepping...

Celerons should go to hell, they suck so bad, shame on Intel.

Oh ok, I wasn't aware that Duron 750s and 800s are out. Celerons suck bad in stock performance, and in price too(comapred to Durons), but they do have their place. Its the cheapest upgrade route for users still stuck on BX platforms.

The only problem with the cC0 stepping was that it didn't work when clocked at 1.13 GHz.

Obviously, it works fine at lower speeds.

I still think that Duron 800 will make the mainstream earlier than these CPUs - it will probably be released with the 1.2 GHz Athlon on 15/10.

>yawn< the Celeron is old news. It's been left behind.
It's not worth attention until they up the bus to 100MHz, and still have room for overclocking.

The p3 1.13 ghz was cbo they changed the spec to Cc0 since the older steping was not able to achieve the speed.

Can you say, 11.5X locked multiplier??? And good ol' 66 bus...

At that rate, I wonder if the 766 is even remotely noticeable from a 666 in performance? Besides being a lesser overclocker.

I bought a C733 a week and a half ago (Googlegear), and built a PC for an old neighbor and already shipped it out. These things are readily available. This was for a retired guy, no 3d needed at all. I set him up with the C733, Asus P3B-F and a Slocket, 128 meg ram, Matrox Mill II AGP, el cheapo sound. He should get it on Tuesday. He will be thrilled with it. Why did I use this setup? The C733 box retail HS/Fan was $120. Put that sucker on a BX board, and I'm done. For his needs it will more than do. It was cheap, and will be reliable. If something goes wrong, guess who gets a phone call? This guy lives about 500 mi from here. I didn't even try to overclock it (as much as I would have liked to). Damn, now that I think of it, I should have fired that sucker up to 100 FSB and seen if it would have done 1.1 Gig! Oh well.

Well, that's why AMD hasn't been able to take off like many of us would like it to. There are too many PC assemblers go through the safe route of using celeron even though Duron has a better price/performance ratio. Well, it's not their fault also becasue it is true that AMD mobo is still a bit too expensive and compatibility with a few hardwares/software are still an issue. Hopefully Mobo manufacturers can get the AMD Mobo price down to ~70 buck mark compare to $140 or so right now. And VIA/Microsoft/Nvidia....and all those manufacturers get their act together and make the AMD the safe choice. If not, Intel can keep on screwing up, playing marketing games and we consumer end up taking the hit.

Ya, you can get "MICRO ATX" board for like 90+, comparable ones for BX and k6 sells for 60 something. Duron Mobo is still quite a bit more expansive compare to Mobos for other Value CPU.
