New 64-bit Build for VM's

Hi All,

I need your expertise in recommending an Intel 64-bit Motherboard with 8gigs of ram and a dual core Quad processor. This will be a desktop PC. My budget cannot handle DDR3 memory at the moment and I think DDr2 will suffice for now. I plan on using it for creating virtual machines, games(sometime), burn DVD's and all the microsoft stuff which I test. Any ideas or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Well I think you mean a quad core processor. 🙂 With that in mind, if your just using VMWare workstation or something like MS Virtual Server or Virtual PC just about any board will do. Because they are os dependant and not hardware like VI3 or ESXi which are bare metal hypervisors. I think most of your P45 boards wil handle 8 gigs with no problem. I would do my research though. Because most people run 4 gigs. I am partial to Asus, I haven't had the longevity luck with Gigabyte but many have had great success using them. Here are 3 cheap and decent boards
Gigabyte UD3R

Gigabyte UD3P

Asus P5Q Pro

I think most people will say the UD3P is the best of these.

Also I wouldn't rule out PIIs either. AMD handles virtual a little better.

Classy,

thanks for relying to my post. You are correct I did mean quad core. I am trying to build an ALL AROUND Desktop that will do many things without building 2 boxes. I like the Gigabyte UD3P but the DDR3 memory is expensive at the moment. I plan on 2-500gig sata drives, DVD burner and DVD rom. I will take a look at ASUS. Have you seen any decent prices on DDR3 memory?

thanks again.

UD3P uses DDR2 😀

Get a Q9550 with 8 GB and your VMware will fly. And Gigabyte and Asus are really the two best choices. The ones Classy linked are the consensus choices and are what I would build a system around if I was doing a build (assuming non-i7). As far as I'm aware, buying better-quality OCZ, Corsair or Kingston RAM will still be pretty cheap. Minimum DDR2-800, but DDR2-1066 is the current mainstream enthusiast standard.

Try putting two hard drives in RAID0 for increased I/O operations. Judging by your nick name you plan to run SQL right? Any HDD larger than 500GB will be great, any motherboard with P43/P45 chipset will handle the 8 Gigs of ram like charm. You could even try RAID0 Stripe with 3 or more disks depending on what are you testing and how many VMachines will run simultaneously. Don't bother with Single HDD or Dual core. Go for the Q9550 / Q9450 + RAID0 + 8 gigs of RAM and don't forget installing Vista x64.
