I'm not sure if I have USB 1.0 or 2.0, how do I check?

$20 is about the price of a firewire card...

Actually its slightly more expensive. But none of the pcs I use have fw so usb2 will be far more useful (assuming you plan to use it for portable storage as well)

Heh. I'm waiting for someone to come up with a mod that allows you to use a full IDE HDD. The mini-IDE connector is just a 40+4 laptop-style (though scaled down)

A custom designed battery pack based around 10Ah NiMH batteries would cost about $100 and should handle a full size HDD's spinup and power for a few hours.

Edit: We're talking Amp-hours here, not milliamp-hours.
