New 3rd Gen iPod not recognized by iTunes on Windows...

I have a brand new 3rd gen iPod that is not recognizable by iTunes on Windows.

I've tried it on 2 computers, using USB 1.1 and built-in firewire. Windows can see the iPod as a removeable harddrive (and I even formatted it), but iTunes says the iPod isnt correctly installed and software must be installed to make it work.
