I made the decision last week to replace my second gaming rig i5-6400. I primarily use the rig for friends when they lan and to host all my chat applications. I also run a handbreak script every night to covert recently downloaded material. I got the rig up and running Saturday night. In general gaming its faster than the 6400. I noticed it is about 2.5 times faster at converting videos in handbreak. I have installed claymore CPU miner and have got the CPU mining monero at 550h on seven threads. I have the CPU undervlolted and it's running at about 64c under load with the PRISM cooler. I have my scripts set up so when handbrake runs it kills the miner and restarts it when done. The PC is doing everything significantly faster than what it replaced. It's also generating about 55 cents a day after power costs.

I plan to try overclocking but, due to the board choice(space requirements) I doubt it will amount to much.

SPECS:
AMD 2700x /w PRISM
Corsair Vengence DDR4 2400
Gigabyte AB350N
Gigabyte RX 480 8GB
Planteks PH-ES215PTG_SRD
850 watt EVGA PSU gold

That memory should go. If you want to see the full performance, at least get 3466 CAS14 (or maybe 15) That will buy you more than about anything. at this point.

Nice upgrade, twice the cores, four times the threads, and lots more clock speed.

I like. I have a 2700X and X470 Asus combo waiting in the wings for me to assemble it. For now, I can't be arsed. I know, what happened to techno-lust? Kind of subsiding, really. I had wanted to make one massive gaming / mining / all-rounder, with 32GB of RAM, 8C/16T, and dual RX 570 8GB cards, but I snagged a 6-GPU open-air mining case, and now I'm planning on making one of those for the living-room table, and moving all of my RX 460/470/570 cards into there. Which leaves my 2700X project, high-and-dry.

(Combo is SOLD)

(Or maybe I can still return to Newegg? It was a combo deal that was $55 off list with a $10 promo code, so I'd hate to return them.)
PM me a price. The 2700x is now $299

I will replace the memory in time. For what it does it's not a super high priority. I am going to put the i5 and board up for sale. If I can sell the memory I will buy something faster. I know my 8700k doesn't really care what memory it runs on but, I gather it's a huge difference with AMD. I'm not really budget focused but, something about
spending $300 on memory really pissed me off. I don't mind paying over MSRP for video cards because there is a real market force driving prices up.

I have been testing the 2700x against my 8700. The 8700k seems faster at loading games but, I think that might be more
to do with the difference in SSD's. In every other tasks, it seems as fast or much faster if it's multithreaded. The 2700x
is an entirely different beast to the Ryzen 1700 I tested last year. I was never interested in the original Ryzens but,
now with these much higher clocks and lower power consumption, they are a steal.
