*New* 250 Hard Drive Making *NOISES*

I recently bought a Hitachi Deskstart 7k250 (250MB) at Frys.

While the disk drive works as files can be accessed, PERIODICALLY I hear a high pitched grinding/spinning for 2-3 seconds (noise is louder than my fans). Then it stops. The noise when I access files from the HD is the normal clicking sound, except for these periodic gaggles.

This noise, doesn't sound like any hard drive noise I've ever heard. It happens about 3 times per hour.

Since I'm new to large HD's, is this noise normal. Or did I get a lemon? It does work, btw, except for this disconcerting noise. Can anyone disgnose this for me?

Please advise...........

That you Sir. You are correct. I called Hitach and they sent me a WAV file with th esound to see if it matches my own. Indeed it is the "meowing" sound. They're sending me a specific patch firmware that's unique to my HD model #.

Accord99......Did you find the firmware significantly reduce the noise on your Hitachi drive????

I may return the drive if I can't substantially reduce this annoying noise. 🙁

I got the new firmware on my 160BG Hitachi and I haven't heard it meow since.
It used to meow every 20 minutes or so before I upgraded it.

dr150, glad to help. Actually, I don't own a 7K250; I've just been reading up forum threads on it because of its excellent performance but its not easy to find in Canada.

I don't know about the rest of you, but hard drives making funny noises makes me VERY nervous, and if it's new I'd just return it and get one from a different company (since it sounds like it's a widespread problem). But that's just me, I HATE crummy hard drives with a passion.

You gotta send me that email! I have a new hitachi 250GB also and it also makes funny noises for a few second several times in a hour.

zephyrprime: If you have meowing sounds, you must call Hitachi for the firmware. Apparently they have MANY firmware versions depending on model # and manufacturing date. The firmware on my Hitachi 250 GB may not work and even make things worse with your 250 GB HD. You will need to give them your serial # so they can email you the right firmware...........Thus far, the mewoing that was occurring every 10 minutes has stopped. Very silent! 😀

NokiaDude: Sorry. I don't have the Wav file anymore. If you call Hitachi, they can email you the wav file. When Hitachi dsent me the wav file, I confirmed that it was indeed the meowing sound that my HD was exhibiting. Hitachi support has been fantastic thus far...0 wait times and familiarity with this issue.........let just hope this HD gives me a couple of good years without cracking. 😀
