New 21" CRT

I'm looking to replace a 21" CRT monitor that got fried from the recent power outage. I have +/- $700 to spend. I would like to get a reliable brand with at least a .22mm dot pitch. I also would prefer as flat a screen as can be had. I do CAD work all day, so a good monitor is very important to me. Any suggestions and/or links? Thanks.

I'm doing some research and I ran across two Sony monitors that look pretty nice. I'm not sure what the difference between them is though. They are the Sony CPD-G520 and the CPD-G520P. I can't find any major differences between them. Newegg has them both listed for $682 with $100 and $60 rebates on them so there must be some difference. Any ideas?

I have a G-520P. The difference is in the case. The P has a 2 tone silver case and sits up a little higher. The G-520 has a light grey case.

I also have a Dell P1110 (earlier version of the P1130) and it's an outstanding monitor as well...

Either will do you well. Note, these are upper end monitors so you pay more for them but they are pretty flawless.

What else would you like to know? I'm sure most people will tell you they are very good...Sony does make an even higher end monitor, the F series for over $1000.
The Dell is made with a Sony tube and is very good too. Not sure if it has as high a peak resolution though. I run my Sony at 1600 x 1200 although it is capable of higher resolution. The print size on IE gets to be a pain at anything higher even though I use a cascading style sheet (CSS).

Some might mention Diamondtron tubes. I'm not as familiar with those.

If you can, order the Sony from Dell if they still carry it. They have a very good return policy...I had to return one one time because it was damaged in shipping and it was painless compared to some outfits.

I was really hoping to find something equivalent to the old Hitachi .22 dot pitch monitors. I don't want a refurb though- this is for long-term use in an engineering office. How does the .24mm stack up for graphics-type work?

Well, I use the 21" Sony for graphics all day long. No complaints. It seems to have more anti-glare coating than the Dell.
Weren't the 22' Hitachis shadow mask with a curved screen? This Sony G520P is perfectly flat.
The mitsubishi diamondtron tube claims to be 22" but the viewable is 20" like the Sony if I recall correctly.

Thanks for the replies Macro. I'm finding that I'm not quite up on the latest technology. I'm replacing a 21" Hitachi that was manufactured in December, 1991. It has .28 dot pitch, a VERY curvy screen, and weighs in the neighborhood of 80 pounds. I have definitely gotten my use out of that monitor

You'll be stunned by the 21" G520P Sony then. I take it you have a video card that will go that high too. We use a Matrox G450 and G550 because they do nice color. Not for heavy gamers but great for graphic art.

you might want to look into the hitachi ones...
they have the lowest dot pitches, sharpest images. plus shadowmasks generally have more accurate colors than trinitrons.
and about the curved screens...
well right now i'm using a 21" hitachi made in 1996... and even though it doesn't have a flat glass... the geometry is perfect.
which all the hitachi monitors now use flat glass...

hmmm just checked hitachi's website.... sad, they discontinued all their 21" monitors now
hitachi's really do make the sharpest, most crisp monitors you can buy..

Got 3 of em sitting in front of me right now

Note: Dell monitors are Sony's with a Dell badge on them. I can do 2048x1536@75Hz with these things.

Dont be fooled by the dot pitch. There is no industry standard and the manufacturers use different methods to determine their dot pitch. SOme are diagonal while others quote the horizontal.

Dont be scared of refurbs man my HP1100 Trinitron is 3 years old and runs perfectly still. 21" 25mm dp 85mhz refresh rate.

if you want a "good" 19" monitor, stay far, far away from the 955DF.
