Audi says that while the new car is physically bigger than before, the unit body weighs almost 10 percent less thanks to the use of steel components that are tailored in thickness to their specific location. As a result, the base-model A4 with its turbocharged four-cylinder engine weighs 3,109 pounds, just 44 pounds more than its predecessor.

Though the body engineering might represent a new departure, the exterior design couldn't be more familiar. It carries all the customary Audi design cues and there are clear visual hints of the A5 coupe ? in fact, from certain angles you'd be hard-pressed to tell the two apart.

The options list is lengthy, with Audi's MMI (Multi Media Interface) coming in combination with satellite navigation, a powerful 505-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system with MP3 compatibility and Bluetooth function for your mobile telephone.

Audi tells us this new A4 is dramatically more engaging to drive, and indeed is the sportiest car in its class. In other words, Audi expects it to usurp the 3 Series as the driver's choice.

Introduced by the A5, Audi's all-wheel-drive system has been recalibrated from the company's traditional 50 percent front/50 percent rear torque split to send 60 percent of the power to the rear wheels in cruising conditions.

As much as I like Audi (like em better than BMWs), I dont think that's gonna happen unless
audi gives their cars a 50/50 weight distribution and/or gets RWD in their lineup
Their 2.0Ts are FWD AFAIK

that just puts into perspective what a fat piece of crap the IS250 is. where does the extra 350 lbs go? and i'm guessing the audi has a real backseat. and the trunk is much bigger. so, really lexus, what is all that metal doing? and audi understands that AWD should be paired with the bigger engines (then again, maybe they wouldn't if they'd started with a RWD car).

of course, the lexus won't catch fire all by itself and have its manufacturer deny responsibility. or have weird electrical gremlins at 50K miles. or have the interior start to peel apart.

Too bad. The one I would want would be a Quattro with the turbo 4 or better yet, a diesel.

both the I4turbo and V6 models come in quattro variants (quattro is now RWD biased, btw)

Incorrect. 2.0T can come with Quattro OR front-wheel drive.

Yeah, good luck with that. Hell, the 335i is faster than an S4.

I guess 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are more important to everyone. That's why some people like cars like the Mini Cooper, not because they are engaging to drive, but because of how fast they are.

I think the new A4 is HOT!

It's got a case of BMW butt.

Interior doesn't flow real well, especially the big scoop around the right hand of dash controls.

I think its for the GPS...so you do not get a glare. I kind of like it, id rather see it in person.

slick looking car though...wish it wasn't so heavy :D

Are you implying that an A4 would be more engaging to drive than a 335i? I would be amazed if that were the case given its quattro drivetrain and Audi's tendency toward nose-heaviness and understeer. I guess anything is possible, but there would be essentially no precedent for this thing to be nicer (or even as nice) to drive than a 3-series.

I'm not, seeing as no one has driven the new A4 yet, but Audi is implying that. I was merely trying to point out that the statement was that it was a more "engaging" car, not faster.

Also, the car in the OP will be the 2009 A4.
