New 2004 Williams-BMW F1 car launched...

Text

Boy is that ugly or what... hahaha... i guess they werent joking when they said it would be a radical departure from the 2003 car... 😕

...can't wait for Ferrari to unveil their 2004 challenger...

Frank Williams, injured in a road accident years ago.

Car looks beautiful. The idea is porbably to get the front wings as far away from the nose to improve aero efficiency.

The shape of the front nose is interesting when you consider the aerodynamics behind it. Looks much different than previous engineered designs. Seems to me as if the two | | would create a pocket of small (turbulance?) as the air went through and around the two | |. I'm sure they researched and designed this thoroughly.

Wait, why is Montoya there? I thought he left BMW.

He leaves for McLaren in 2005... which is why people are saying he's going to have a tough 2004 season since they're not going to let him know some things about the car.

Yah ... Its a weird innovasion of the twin keel design... behind the | | are / \ so i'm guessing they made the design focus on airflow around those instead... hey if it works i'm sure the whole field will have this next year... so i hope they don't work. 😛

The floor model sure isn't race ready, though.

Looks like it had a trouble free track shakedown right after... didn't need to get towed back to the pit.

4 days of testing is coming up... let's see how fast this sucker is... 😀

I can't wait to see the McLaren car though... They did well in 2003, and they didn't even launch the 2003 car IIRC, they just moved on to the next year and forgot about it.

It's already been testing... it looks like a refined MP4-18... the one that never got raced... 😕 One thing's for sure it had a month had start on testing over everyone else... here's a pic. 😀 It hasn't been officially launched yet though.

Ferrari should have their car out by the end of the month or early Feb.

As for the new front end, they basically took a chunk out of the nose above the front wing, thereby allowing for better airflow = more downforce and lower drag.

As for Montoya being held back info, etc. from the team due to his impending departure in 2005, that will not happen until he is out of the championship picture in 2004, and perhaps not until BMW is out of the Constructors, which IMHO will be late in season ... if at all (hopefully ...). Firstly, Williams is in its longest ever dry spell as far as Championships of any kind, and they've got the best pieces (JPM & car) in place to do it since '96. Secondly, Frank and JPM still get along ... Frank knew of JPM's plans with several races to go in 2003 and still supported JPM to the end. As Frank says (of JPM) ... "He's a racer." That's just what Frank wants. On the other hand, his history with such drivers never seems to be long term, esp. as he doesn't like to pay big $'s. Then again, JPM also has said, he didn't leave for the amount of money, it was instead because Ralf was paid more than JPM (ie. the principle of it). He also doesn't like the BMW-enforced favoritism shown to Ralfie.

Finally, as for the McLaren, so far it is rumored to be approx. 1.0 sec/lap faster than the Williams, after their first rounds each of testing at Valencia.

It's gonna be another great year in F1 !

Just hope we can keep the U.S. GP going ... ticket sales are way down for last 2 years :frown:
