People paid 35k for s2000's when they first came out.

The lotus has better looks, class, many people have wanted one for MANY years, and they're arguably the most nimble and best handling car you'll be able to buy.

I want 2!

Performance:

Acceleration: 0-100 km/h: 5.9 s. 0-160 km/h: 16.5 s. Maximum speed (estimated): 202 km/h (126 mph)

eh..... for $40,000 u can get a lot better performance and its only a 1.8L 4cylinder - -;;;; , but maybe the handling is worth it

This car is definitely not about top speed.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious :) It's not about being cheap, either...

I've seen and sat in a Elise, but not the one that is coming to the States next year. That one will feature a 190hp Toyota 4-cylinder engine.

Sucks it doesn't use the special 1.8 liter Lotus engine.

Who would pay 40k for a Toyota? I guess people who like Lexus'.

THe actual Elise is a dream machine, and I believe it goes 0-60 in 5.4. It weighs next to nothing, which is what kept it from coming here for so long (couldn't pass any crash tests.)

Same deal w/ the Opel Speedster and the Voxal VX220. Using small ecotec 4 cylinders, and no weight to move quickly and nimbly. And they are produced by GM. But you can't get them here.

All very cool cars, although I'm more a fan of the supercharged v8.

It was a Rover engine. Now it's using a Toyota engine so it can pass emissions here.

Voxal VX220
That's 'Vauxhall'. :)

The Elise is an amazing vehicle, but it's not entirely suited to American tastes and in many ways its "talents" would be wasted in our sprawling cities and interstate highways. I hope people who buy it take it out canyon-carving or hit the track with it often to appreciate the amazing handling of the Elise.

Yeah right. People who can afford to spend $40k on a weekend car like that will end up just taking it to starbucks. :(

I'd love to take one autocrossing. :)

Anyone have a link to that video where an Elise gets dusted by a Corvette on the Nurburgring? (sp?)

Summary of the video:
The 'vette goes out first.
Maintains the lead.
The elise manages to pull along side on the exit of a corner.
A reletively straight section comes along.
The 'vette disappears over the horizon.
(this was a RACING Elise, and a street corvette)

The old nurburgring? i don't see how an elise can make up any ground on that track.

boyracer: given that it was a full race version vs. a street version, I would've expected it to do better. The Elise pulled up somewhere near the Kesselchen, and the Corvette disappeared right after the Brunnchen

iirc, I think it was just the Vette driver taunting the Elise driver. On some smaller circuits the Elise can definitely make up time around the corners. The 'Ring is just too big!!

i dont exactly know which elise you're talking, i haven't seen the video yet and there's probably like 6 different ones ... the only racing version i know is the one in the FIA GT... Elise GT1... they crammed a V8 in there and i don't think a street corvette can run with that. :D C5 is an awesome car though... so i wouldn't be surprised if it beat an Elise on a dedicated race track.
