Just got my harddirve in the mail today and when installing windows XP it only shows up as one 130 GB partition. Anyone know why this is? Its an old version of XP (pre SP1).

thanks for any help

You explained it yourself 😛

Pre-SP1 Windows XP can only recognize drives upto 137GB, which is 130GB after formatting.

Best bet it to upgrade XP.

Oh and btw, this belongs in Operating Systems 😉🙂

Nope, setup recognized the hard drive, just not the full capacity.

Amol is right. You need SP1 or greater. My recommendation is to slipstream SP2 onto your XP setup CD and install Windows with that. A slipstreamed setup disc will recognize the full capacity of your hard drive, and you will also benefit from a semi-patched machine upon first boot up (protecting you from pre-SP2 worms and saving you time in updating).

Is there any unallocated space when you go to Control Panel > Administrive Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management?

You will need to resize the partition using something like Partition magic. I do not know of any free tools capable of resizing NTFS partitions.

umm, i didnt realize i was going to have to be buying extra software to utilize my harddrive.. is there any other way?

Thats already been answered. Install with a version of XP with the SP already slipstreamed in.

Delete the 130G partition and create a new one encompassing the entire drive?
