New 100gb Maxtors have 11ms seek time?

I was just looking at pricewatch and noticed the new maxtor 100gb hard drives have an 11ms seek time! I was wondering if anyone know why this is, and the 80gb maxtor drive which also is 5400rpm but it has like a 9ms seek time. Anyone know why this is?

the bigger the drive, = slower seek times (right?)😕

but if thinking about getting a 100GB HDD,

why not try, say 3 30GB drives, or 3 40's...

may-b be a TADDDDDDD more $$$ but you still have good fast seek times... just my 2 pennies.. 🙂

Uh... they do have BIGGER platters, not more platters, those 100GBs are on 40GB platters, with three platter design. The seek time is in fact 11ms, this particular 100GB model is designed for capacity, not performance.
 
who cares about seek on a 100gig drive, you just put movies, music, anime, and porn on it
I would take a 200gig with 20ms seek

Well they are not BIGGER platters, they are more DENSE platters. Normally higher densities yield better preformance. That is why I figured that they might be a 4 or 5 platter design (I didn't look at the specs).

By bigger you would be talking about like a quantem bigfoot with the 5 inch diameter platters. Those puppies are slow.
 
I mean bigger in capacity(GB count), but you could it call it denser. Btw, Maxtor is now sporting both their 40GB/platter design, and Quantum's 40GB/platter disign.

When did maxtor release these 100GB?!?! I just got my 80 GB in from Newegg today and if i had known 100GB where comming then i wouldn't have ordered it. I always need more space as I always downlpad movies and DMB SHN shows off of the internet. DAMN, I might have to return the 80GB and get the 100GB. 20GB of space is alot to gain for me, ugh, is newegg good at this kind of sutff? I didn't even opne the 80GB i got yet.

it makes a difference u know. if my scsi drives was 2ms faster. whooosh! sub 4ms performance!

If its unopened, call and ask. Their CS reps are SUPER nice, you have nothing to lose.
 
LOL the reason i was complaing about 2ms is because i figured it would be at least as fast because i was under the impression that more dense platters yeilded quicker seek times. I also doubt it has more physical platters than the 80gb ones do since the platters are more dense. Oh well i guess i will just get me one of the 80gb 7200rpm WD drives since they are the same price as the 80gb 5400rpm Maxtor drive.

Uh....no. The 100GB drive uses 33GB platters not 40. The 40GB platters are a completely different line of drives. Though they do use 3 platters with 6 heads, not 5 like a 40GB/platter drive would. 11ms seek for a 5400RPM drive isn't all that bad, noting that the 2 stats are not linked in any way to each other. Maxtor's 40GB/platter drives have a 12ms seek time, which are intended as a value line. Higher data density does make higher read head precision necessary, but engineering progresses at rate that creates these better heads to deal with denser drives nullifying any expected seek increase.

No, latency is affected by rotational speed, and is obviously a set value depending on the rate of rotation. 5.6ms/5400,4.2ms/7200,3ms/10,000,2ms/15,000, all numbers are averages which is simply the time a full rotation takes divided by 2. Seek time is how long it takes the drive head to travel across the platter to the correct track.
