New $1000 Gaming Computer, Please Help!

All,

I am interested in building a new computer for games like star craft 2 and others that will come out within the next few years. I have a lot of experience with computers, but I have never actually built one before. My budget is appx $1000 including the monitor. Although I am flexible here

I am currently using a mac book as my main computer, but I want something that will run games.

Could you all recommend me a gaming system. I would like to use the ati 5750 card, and a decent lcd that is at least 21 -24 inches. I think I would prefer to use the i5 750 but I don’t know much about which cpu is best for the money right now.
What other components do you reccomend. Are there any combo deals like CPU/GPU....Case/Power supply etc..
Thanks,
Alex

Budget is flexible by $100 or so. Basically if I could get something really great that went just over 1000 that would be ok, but I would prefer it stay close as possible to 1000.

the 5850 might be overkill for me graphics wise. Do you reccomend amd over intel?

Are there any good cases that come with power supplies?

I think the harddrive should be faster than 5400.

Epidemis's build is good except for the HDD. You really don't want to use a "green" drive for your system drive. Go for a WD Black or Samsung F3. If you want to save some money, step down to a 5770.

AMD is a cheaper platform and if you're only going to use the machine for gaming your performance is going to fall into one of 2 categories:

  1. GPU-limited
  2. CPU-limited, but the FPS is so high that it doesn't matter

5850 is a definite overkill. 5750 will suffice but you have to crank down the eye candy. 5770 hits the sweet spot for you.

Case+PSU = Raidmax smilodian+500w
HDD = Samsung F3 500GB

AMD is great value for gamers, for a 1000$ budget I'd recommend it in a heartbeat, since you can splurge alittle more on the GPU which makes a greater difference.

- Alright, personally I don't feel the black advantage over green is so great. And remember that the speed is a function of platter density times RPM.

- Usually cases with the PSU included are craptastic, just buy it yourself.

Do you reccomend going Intel or AMD? If so what motherboards?

AMD is the way to go. Given your price point AMD offers the best bang for buck. The motherboard+RAM combo Epidemis suggested is good. Or you could go with this combo. Saves you ~$20 without sacrificing performance.
This memory is one of the best in the market right now IMO.

Intel for CPU, ATI for GPU. i5 750 is a good choice and you can get good combos/discounts if you live near a fry's electronics or microcenter

If you want BFB, AMD wins. Epidemis has a good build. What games are we talking about? 5850 wouldn't be overkill, per se, if you get a 24' @ 1200 gaming. 5770 can handle it but might struggle a little with newer games. Get the WD Black 640. It's 2 platters of 320 and probably one of the fastest mechanicals along with the F3. You could step down to the 5770 if you don't want to spend on it, but I'd recommend putting out a little more for the 5850. Snag a cheap Antec 300 while you're at it.

Of course there's the option to opt for Intel, but you'll save some money going AMD without losing significant performance. Of course, if you want to save EVEN more money, you can snag a Propus...just throwin' that out there.

Fry's/MC is your best bet for a kick-ass 955BE + Mobo deal.

Ok, I think I'm sold on the AMD and motherboard and the memory.

Would the antec 300 case be big enough for the 5750/5850?

What is a good cheap powersupply that would work with those graphics cards?

Does anyone have any other monitor suggestions?

Do you really think it is worth the price of about $150 to upgrade to the 5850 from the 5750?

Yeah, the 300 should fit it all. Get a cheap 600w from Antec/Corsair/Seasonic. Those seem to be the most reliable. I would throw TT TP in the mix, but I dislike some Thermaltake products. I have yet to heard of any OCZ's having problems and they seem to be the cheapest, but you never know...

Yes. Let me reiterate that. Hell yes. The 5850 murders anything at 1080 gaming. Even at 1200 you get superb performance. A nice 24-inch coupled with that beast will give you one hell of a gaming experience.

Yeah, it's a pretty good deal. Just slap in a good video card and you should be good to go. The only thing that might give me pause is USB 3 and Sata 3... but that is a relatively minor consideration.

Do you think this combo is a good deal/better than the other combos you guys have mentioned?

I'm really digging that combo. Leaves plenty of room in your budget for a nice videocard.

2 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (blue @ x16 mode,gray @ x4 mode)

It's the case (w/shipping) that really kills that deal. Here is the Antec Three Hundred for $70 shipped or if you must have the side panel lookee at the NZXT Apollo. Save yah $70 right there.

Here is a Phenom 955BE C3 / HD 5770 1Gb / Asus M4A79XTD EVO AM3 790X combo for $403 ARs.

When you need a boost CrossFire the HD 5770 and you will be King! 😀

This GSkill 2x2Gb DDR3 1333 is on the QVL list at $108.

See if this Asus LCD works for you --- $190 with code EMCYRNN26 through the 28th.

That looks like a great deal.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the thumbs down for the other mother board. Is there something bad about it?

Also, this deal once again includes the 5750. What are you guys honest opinon about the 5750 vs. 5850. I know the 5850 is better but it is twice as much. I want to be able to play most of the games well for the next few years with at least medium detail and decent resolution.

Also, does anyone have any keyboard/mouse reccomendations and is there a cheap place to get windows 7?

Thanks,

My dad has the NZXT Apollo and the thing is dead silent, moreso than my NZXT Hush (although I could probably blame my 4870 fan for the noise).

Nothing wrong with the PCI-E lanes. For the 5850 (or 5870, I don't remember), there are some marks benching them @ x16, x8, x4, x1. Even at x4, I think it was around 95% performance, so I doubt the lane is really the limiting factor (I stole this from mfenn's post). I agree with getting the Antec 300. Simple, quiet, cool. Unless you're into flashy things. If you can fit a 5850 into your budget, by all means do so (with a 1200 monitor of course). Even if you didn't want such a powerful card, the 5770 is a great budget gaming choice (much better than 5750, imo). With 5850, you can crank it up all the way! Multi-GPU setups shouldn't be a concern with regards to future upgrades. I'm pretty sure an 8k, 9k series will be out by the time your 5850 becomes insufficient for gaming, and there will always be single cards that can game extremely well.

(you just missed the $10 off code)

The Asus 785g Evo is a fine motherboard but the x4 mode on the second PCIe x16 slot may limit your video subsystem in the future.

The combo I listed includes the HD 5770, not the HD 5750. Look at this Anand article for a comparison. Note where the article references the HD 5770 CF, or CrossFire. This is where you combine 2 video cards in your computer to run in tandum. Also note where the HD 5770 CF whips up on the single card HD 5850 --- and sometimes even the HD 5870 😱 -- for effectively the same price as a 5850 (which is kinda over-priced, anyway).

The second x16 PCIe slot in the Asus 790x runs at 'x8' speed which will better benefit you over the x4 mode in most instances.

I've built a few rigs with the Apollo -- for the price it's a good deal. I worry about that door, though - LOL - but I haven't had any complaints.

5770 in CF has some problems. The only one I can think off the top of my head is Crysis, but I'm 100% sure there are some others. Google would be your best friend here. Just do single card, it's already more than enough.
