nevermind

1) The 2 7900GT in SLI would be faster. Depending on the games you play, and the resolution you play at, you may not need more than a single overclocked 7900GT (or X1800XT).

2) IMO, no.

2.) Is it worth the price jump from a X2 3800 to a Opty165 just for the extra L2 cache (512kb vs. 1MB), or will it show little performance boost?

1--I would stay with the single 7900GT.

2--If your a hardcore gamer "yes" its worth the price jump to go with the Opty165.
If just somebody who plays games every so often then "no" stick with the X2.

i'd get a faster single card solution like the x1800 backed by howard or the x1900xt(x), 2 cards = double the heat in the system (nvidia cards dont exhaust heat), double the noise, double the fan problems, double the rma chances and doa chances, and failure chances.. its just not worth it

no i'd get the 3800x2, the cache difference wont be noticed in everyday usage

I have an Opteron 165 and love it. Opteron sounds way cooler than Athlon in my opinion. I have no idea if it is faster than the 3800X2 though.

Clock speed is king, more cache is nice, but in many tests it's been shown to be irrelevant (4400X2 performing exactly the same as 4200X2), where it does make a difference it's normally 1-2%. It's up to you really.

I'd go with a single card setup, and a single slot motherboard. If you need to upgrade in 6 months then you can get yourself an X2XXX or a 8XXX card then.

Well i am going with a single card setp-up, but getting a SLI mobo (only $10 more, just in case)
