Apparantly I can get a 9800 for 130 bucks, is it worth it? I really havn't kept up with video cards at all, and it seems like benchmarks never include the plain old 9800 (XT, pro, se, but not the regular 9800). So, what do you think?

for 130, go for it. 9800 is about 2x as fast as a ti4600.

Hell yes get it for that price--$200 is the absolute cheapest you'll get them for anywhere else. Even if you aren't going to use it, at least get it to resell.

Hmmm....so it would probably be worth it at the $200 price even.

Does anyone have a link where this card is actually benchmarked? Granted, I didn't look very hard, but it seems like its never benched.

You could probably sell your 4600 for $100 and have a card that's nearly a gazillion times better (OK, that was a little exaggerated) for $30. I wouldn't think twice about getting the 9800 for that price.

Well, I have a 4400, not a 4600, but I get the point. I really just had no idea how well the 9800 performs, especially since it seems like there are a "gazillion" different variants out there.

My local best buy was selling 9800's for 230 dollars with a 100 dollar rebate. The sale is good through tomorrow, but they do not have any in stock, and apparantly they won't be getting any. They wouldn't give my friend a raincheck, but I'm going to call and complain. Can they decide to just not give rainchecks if they don't feel like it? Store policy or something?

Well, I upgraded from a TI-4400 to a 9800NP.

The upgrade was worth it.


I have since sold it for a 9800 Pro.

Just because. I upgrade my P4B 2.53 to a P4B 3.0 and wanted a new card to take this system through its paces.

Update - they now tell me I can't get the deal anymore because no Best Buy stores have stock in the card and it is allegedly going absolete. Are they actually stopping production of the card, or does the supervisor (more likely) just not know what he's talking about?

They've actually stopped making the cards, IIRC. So he's not trying to get out of it, unfortunately ATi have stopped making them.

Normally I would say the upgrade is not worth it, but at that price, it's a no brainer. Go for it. $130 for a 9800 is a freaking great deal....too good to pass up if you have the scratch.

Just FYI, if you do come across the deal again at another BestBuy, the 9800np offers roughly the same performance as the 9700Pro. Some benches slightly higher, some slower. The main advantage of the 9800np over the 9700Pro is that you may more overclocking headroom.

Thanks for the info. Apparently, however, Best Buy will no longer stock the 9800 at all.
