Nevermind Floppies, when was the last time you used your DVD/Bluray drive?

Holy shit technology is moving fast. I realized I haven't even touched my DVD drive in months. Everything is via internet now...

I have a blu-ray drive in my HTPC. I've used it once. I got an $80 bluray drive back when the players were still $300+.

There are a handful of movies I'd like to own on disc so I can watch all the extra footage. I'll probably go buy a standalone Bluray player sometime in the future.

I have actually only watch a few movies this year, a couple on my PC's DVD drive, one through VOD, 2 or 3 on Youtube/Google Video.

a few times a month surprisingly - i burn audio and data cds/dvds.

however, i have pretty much transitioned over to streaming and getting my files from my networked hard drives via gigabit ethernet, firewire 800, and usb.

Yesterday. I still buy / rip CDs (especially when the price difference between MP3 album and physical disc is $0.33).

don't have a BD. don't use my dvd player since i stream most media. CDR gets good use since i still burn audio CD's.

I was using it almost daily on my desktop before I packed it up for the move in Septeember and the USPS smashed it. Primarily for ripping/burning BD movies.

How much is a blank Bluray? More importantly, how long does it take to burn one?

"a" blank BR disc is $4.

if you buy them by the spindle they're $1 and under each.

burn speeds seem to be a bit over a GB a minute.

i wouldnt mind backing up to optical discs, but when you have terabytes of data its not practical to burn to 40+ discs

i like backing up to spindle drives, encrypted with truecrypt if need be

installing windows, ripping cd's, occasionally playing a dvd movie.

i haven't bought a game disc in forever, and if i did it would get a no-cd crack pronto. honestly, i don't expect to buy any more programs on disc and few additional cd's.

It's been so long that I took my DVD drive out. Installing Windows 7 from a USB thumbdrive takes about 8 minutes.

My DVD burner died sometime on my last computer... when i got a new case, i never got a new one, so... I think around 3 years. Hmmm... guess I should upgrade sometime.
