Never use Ryder Truck

I reserved a Ryder truck 3 weeks ago to use this past friday 10/17/01. The truck wasn't there for me to rent at my local dealer because they didnt have any available. My mailed confirmation from Ryder for the reservation was useless for expediting one from another location . Ryder did let me have a 24 foot truck a day later at the same price of a 15 foot unit. However that did not make up for a day of lost work that was planned off for the move.
Now for the good part: I finished unloading the Ryder truck and was taking it to the drop off location to return it. Three miles away from the drop off point I turned the dome light on to read a map and the headlights went off (lovely). and now the dome light stayed on even when I switched it off.. I tried to call Ryder Roadside at 10:30pm and they would not answer the phone. Here I am with a contract that says I am responsible for their junk and they won't come fix it . There is noway I was going to abandon the truck and I did not have time to sleep in it so that it did not get vandalized. Next I told my daughter to drive my vehichle straight to the Ryder drop off location and I would stay directly behind her in the Ryder so that I could see from her headlights. The dome light was creating a lot of glare so I held my hand over that hot baby so that I could see to drive. I did not make any stops to fuel up because of added danger entering the highway from a fueling staion. I did deliver the truck and there is a diesel pump that the dealer can use about 2 blocks away from the place to fuel it up at $1.29 a gallon.. I owe that for about 30 gallons.
Now Ryder wants to charge me $3.00 a gallon to fill it up and a $25.00 service charge for labor to drive it two blocks in the daylight. Michele at Ryder customer service told me I should have driven the truck as far as I had to in the dark to fill it up and it is in my contract to return the truck filled up.
When I called American Express they said they would dispute the charges for me and probably would review the Ryder contracts .

Call Ryder customer service again, demand to speak to a supervisor, and don't let them off the phone until they refund the gas charges (and I'd go for a little off the rental charge to make up for the inconvenience and danger the truck put you through). Make sure to mention that you've already disputed the charges with AmEx, and they should probably be willing to work something out. Don't be afraid to let the rep know that you are upset, but stay professional or you'll give them a reason to get you off the phone. Good luck.

What a crock...tell Michele that her answer is unacceptable, and you want to speak to her supervisor immediately. Customer service, eh? Bleh!

I had a horror story like this but with U-Haul as the vendor.

I'm sure you can find examples like this from all the vendors.

I don't know of a simple solution, other than to be prepared for the worst when planning a move. Allow yourself a few extra days in case you get sh*t on like this.

Same thing happened to me when I rented a Ryder truck.... They rented my truck from out from under me. The guy was like "I'll give you two 10 foot trucks for the same price". Only problem is finding enough people to DRIVE THEM. Never again will I rent from Ryder. Sure they are cheap, but they also suck really hard, and talking to someone in customer service is next to impossible.

The guy finally found a truck for me. At first he wanted me to drive about an hour to go get one, and I told him to find one closer. Grrr...

Well, the good news is that I got where I needed to go with all my stuff intact.

The headlights on the Ryder have an intermitting problem and the mechanics said the lights are working fine now. Ryder says there is nothing that they can do about my excessive fuel costs they have to charge me.
I called the Virginia State Police and reported the the lights have a problem on that Ryder truck. Ryder will now be liable for injuries on that truck if the headlights fail and cause an accident. It would be nice to be there in about an hour when the State Police come knocking on their door to inspect that truck...

you need to talk to a district manager... write it all in a letter... send it to the DM, CEO, PR and local office. then write you local newspaper.

I hate to say it, but they got you there. I've rented trucks and they make it real clear that you better fill it up or they charge you an arm and a leg to do it themselves.

No matter how late, no matter if the headlights worked or not, no matter how pissed off you were, you should have filled it up. You said it was only 2 blocks away! Now you will have to pay the price for not doing so.

That's ridiculous...the headlights didn't work! He did good just getting back to the place that night. I personally would have kept it until the next morning, and told them I wasn't paying a late fee since it would have been illegal to drive it at night w/ no lights.

He should have filled up with the headlights not working?!? Come on... that is absurd. He knew what the contract stated, but if the headlights weren't working, he was at risk for an accident which could have damaged the truck, another vehicle, and perhaps caused injuries or death. What Ryder expects of him is completely unreasonable.

Have to agree with everyone else here - take it to whatever resources are available for consumer complaints.

Ryder hit my "do-not-use" list last month when they pulled the exact same trick on my 70-year-old mother, of all people! She had reserved a 24-ft truck 6 weeks in advance, but was told that none were available when the day came. They offered her a 15-ft truck at a "reduced rate" - this with the house already sold, new owners waiting to pick up the keys, and all of us kids and our spouses and our kids and some family friends waiting to load this thing and head 1000 miles west. (and this on July 3rd!)

We ended up with the smaller truck, every vehicle heading out loaded to the gills, and a U-haul that was supposed to be staying in KC getting re-attached to one of our trucks to carry the spillover. Seven vehicles and two days later, we finally got everything moved.

And Ryder is getting nastygrams from disgruntled consumers in four different states now. (Do you have any idea how long it took to set up this move in the first place?!?)

No more Ryder. :|:disgust::|:disgust:

sorry to hear about your problems. i'd dispute the charges. Had everything (headlights) worked normally, you would be responsible for the extra gas charges. Because of mechanical failure, you should not be responsible. I'd talk with some managers/supervisors at ryder.

PG, I know it is clear on the contract to fill up the truck.. You have to understand that I was holding my right hand over the stuck on dome light to block the glare on the windows so that I could see out the truck to drive it. Diesel fuel is the last thing that I was worried about at the time.
The mechanic that told me the lights are working fine now also told me that I should have filled that truck with high grade gasoline before I brought the truck back.
This mechanic is so good at his job that he cant find a problem with the lights but he has found a way for a diesel engine to run on gasoline..

UHaul is no better. When i moved, i had reserved a 24ft truck, i think. the mid-size. Anyways, when i got there, they had sent my truck out and all they had left was a 19ft. They offered me a $10 refund, wow thanx guys.

They also make it clear that they are providing the customer with a truck that is safe and in working order.

Customer service at Ryder really can make someone laugh at them.. When I complained to them that the truck was not available to me on time. Customer service had the nerve to tell me that I only reserved the price for my moving date. Then I told Michele that the first line of the Ryder confirmation letter reads " You've made a smart move by reserving a Ryder truck". She then reiterates that I did not reserve the truck when I gave Ryder my credit card info to secure it and the confirmation letter with a reserve number does not mean I reserved the truck.
I asked Michele where the ambiguity is in that first sentence of the letter and she did not have an answer. She just knows that the Ryder customer service is great and she is not stupid no matter how many times that I told her that she is.

lol, I hope you're kidding about telling her that she's stupid. I mean, yes, we both know she's stupid, but it won't help your cause by trying to convince her of that fact ;)
