We have two birds in our house, one is a green fronted Amazon and the other is a Grey (both parrots). The grey one is an attention whore, he has pretty much mimicked every sound the house makes, from the telephone to the squeek that happens when we open the closet to put our shoes in. He also head bangs if you put your face in front of him and move it up and down.

The green one i think is the smarter one. He knows one song, and says hello and bye bye when someones leaving (esp my mom, he loves my mom). But he's also very brave and doesn't have a problem exploring the house. Last night my mom had both of them outside in the back to chill, and someone brough a ladder in the backyard which scared the hell out of them, and the green one flew away. He landed in our neighbors tree, got scared when we put up the ladder again, and flew to another tree. This time he was so high up that it was almost impossible to get him. HE was up there for at least an hour, then finally someone scared him enough where he flew like a 200 yards to another tree, where he was low enough for me grab the branch. That was a long two hour ordeal around the neighborhood... when it was over the bird practically was exhausted from hanging on to all the branches we were shaking trying to get him off, lol.

Anyways, i think they're alright pets, but kind of a pain in the ass. They can be really cute at times but i generally don't really like them. BUt oh well, they're gonna be around for a while (i think theyre about 6 years old now) and im moving out in a few years, so i can finally get a doberman or something.

Dude, YOU NEED to get their flight feathers clipped- DO NOT let your bird outside the way he is. Bear in mind, these birds are not in their native land, so their colors really stand out here, so any predator birds would NAIL them, out here, in the wild.

Pics are broken. Please fix them!

I love talking birds. My friend in HS had one and he told me he taught it all the curse words. 🙂

[EDIT] Looks like the pics are working again. Cool bird.

The pics worked fine for me. That zoosrus site isnt meant to have 326 users looking at one pic guys. Perhaps you have overloaded their site. give it some time and try again. I would love to have someone else host it if you want🙂

Ok, so I've had this African Grey for about two years. He was 8 months old I got him, and he was a feather-plucker, which usually indicates boredom. I kinda thought that he must be pretty smart if he's bored in a huge cage with lots of toys. About a month after he was home he started talking. I know what everyone says about birds just being able to mimick and not know what they're saying, but I am convinced that I have a genius as a pet. When I walk into the room he says "Hi Chels". If I'm busy with something he says "Whatchadoin?" He calls the dogs by name and tells them to shut up if they're barking. If he sees a cat he will go "here kitty kitty!" and then slide down his cage bars to bite them. He gives kisses, screeches like the door, farts, whistles, and says hello when the phone rings.

Does anyone else have one of these awesome birds? Does yours talk and is it intelligent? I know you guys will ask for pics, so here

my uncle had a few parrots. one gray on one the typical green. not sure exactly what kind they are.

they would do the same things. they were definately smart and aware of what was going on around them, and could communicate. they would call for the kids to get up for school and work. when a kid would be in trouble, he would say the name and tsk tsk while my aunt was chewing them out. they were awesome birds, kinda like having a small dog.

how do you guys clip your bird's nails?

My African Grey doesn't like it when I try to clip his nails.

hes also evil. He talks only when no ones in the room and wants to perch on my arm but doesn't want me to pet him. He also tries to take the nails off my fingers.

the funniest thing was when I bought him a toy with 8 bells on it, the next day he ripped out the piece that makes the noise inside of each of the 8 bells.

Here is a subtle, but effective trick: If you can set him on the floor, drape a towel over him and scoop him up behind his neck and expose his body. keep his head covered so he doesnt freak out on you and he can chew on the toewl instead of your hand. His feet will instinctively curl up(birds actually use their foot muscles to open rather than close their feet, thats how they can sleep standing up) so get someone else ther to help you if possible.

This comes from about 20 years of experience with my grey, Gizmo. Funniest damn bird Ive ever had.He would make a muffled barking sound like a hearing a dog barking from behind a window. He'd meow, bark, make hammering noises(incliuding an echo) and was basically a one person bird and hated my wife.

I,unfortunately had to give him and my red lored amazon to a good friend of mine, because I have a two year old daughter and also have 5 cats. Waaaaayy too much going on in my house.

I've also owned the following birds: Molucccan Cockatoo, Blue and Gold Macaw(have fun trimming those talons) three cockatiels,a blue front amazon, two quakers and three nanday conures. living in South Florida at the time, you would see birds in many peoples houses because they get them into the country illegally down there and people used to sell birds real cheap. Most of the birds I mentioned above( blue front, conures, and quakers) were actually given to me by different people.

Peace
