You just can't trust the Russkies....

Last month, Moscow announced it was developing a 10-year cooperation agreement with Iran to built civilian nuclear reactors. This week, the Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il during the third week of August.

Canada's Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. drew up complete plans for nuclear reactors that would self-recycle their fuel, making the creation of weapons-grade material from it impossible.

Not a single country was interested in buying it.

AECL scrapped the plans and went back to building traditional reactors. Don't be a fool - any reactor can over time be used to produce weapons-grade materials.

Its business its not personal. Change the thread topic.

They will build powerplants, not warheads... You cant convert a truss-rod into a warhead genious, they are 2 separate things.

Well, someone with more knowledge and/or the enthusiasm to google himself up to genius level on this subject will come along later, I'm sure, but, for now, I seem to remember reading that you CAN mine weapons grade plutonium from the spent fuel used in commercial reactors, but only in very minute amounts, making the acquisition of same a tedious, perhaps years long process.

Plutonium production is a natual byproduct of enriched Uranium Fission. 10kg of Plutonium is all that is needed for a nuclear warhead. It's simple really, you run the reactor for 4 years or so, take the waste rods and remove the plutonium from them. Whala, weapons grade fissionable material. It's where South Africa got their nuclear material, it's where Israel got their Nuclear material, it's where Pakistan and India got their nuclear material and it's where all the allies get their nuclear material. If you give a country a nuclear reactor that is unmonitored by the international community they can create weapons grade material. It's the reason Israel bombed the reactor Iraq tried to build in the 80's.

Don't be so naive to think that if a nuclear reactor is built in Iran that weapons grade material won't be generated, collected and used to produce a nuclear weapon.

The article was about Russia and Iran, not Iraq. But anyway, last I heard, Saddam was still trying, no confirmed reports of him having nukes.

Russia doesn't exist just to please the US. They have been nice to us lately, helping out on the oil market and supporting war on terrorism. But Russians have their own economic needs and act in their own interest. It's called capitalism. We tought them what it is and they learned well. They have skills and products that the Iranians want, Iran has money that the Russians want. It's very natural. I know to you the Iranians seem like an Islamic terrorist state, but Iranians never took Russian hostages. There are many Muslims in russia, and Iran is probably one of the more peaceful neighbors that Russia has. They are kindof like Mexico to us. Russians are much more concerned about expansion of NATO to their doorstep than they are about Iran. The Islamic terrorists that Russia fears are Sunni Wahabbi sects from Saudi Arabia that infiltrate Chechnya, not the Shiite Iranian muslims who are relatively peaceful even if they are fundamentalist.
If US is so concerned about Russian reactors, why don't they buy them so they don't go to Iran? I am sure the Russians don't care where their goods go. It's easy to say don't sell this and that, but there is a huge nuclear industry in Russia that needs money and many workers who need to make a living.
If they don't make a living in Russia building reactors, they will just go to Iran and build reactors there. Also, the Russians do care about Iran not having nukes because Iran is on their border. They have made an assesment of that threat, I am sure. Besides, I thought Bush liked nuclear power.

There are many Muslims in russia

I fully agreed with you up till this point ;) There are really no Muslims there, i lived in the country for years, hehe. There are all over at Tadjikisan, Tyrkey Borders, Tyrkmenistan, etc... But thats not main Russian land.

Its true, Russians dont give a damn what Iraq does, they are worried about Chechnya, and they have their own terror problems, with Chechny's troops blowing up things in Russian cities.

How would you like to have a thread titled "Never trust an American"?

Besides, regular Russians have nothing to do with this, the Gov. is making the shots.
