Got a nice surprise when I got my CC statement yesterday...about $5k in charges I didn't make. I am stumped. I have no clue how someone could get access to my CC number. I never give anyone my card other than at a restaurant, have never lost it, etc. All the charges made were made, according to AMEX, by swiping the card at a physical store or paying at the pump (no online transactions and no keying in the number), so someone managed to make a duplicate copy of my credit card after getting a hold of the info.

Fortunately, I filed a claim and from the looks of it AMEX rocks and won't hold me accountable for charges I didn't make.

Pretty scary stuff.

Welcome to the world of Identity Theft.

The Bad News: The cops, FBI, etc., could give a sh*t.
The Good News: You won't have to pay any of it and, with a little vigilance, you can keep your credit report clean.

I suggest putting a fraud alert on all of your credit reports. They last for 6 months.

Haha...that part is actually pretty funny. The majority of purchases were at a Rite Aid. I've never bought anything at a Rite Aid. Someone is getting drugged up.

There were also two huge purchases from Footlocker and a Walmart Supercenter. I've never bought anything from Footlocker and the Walmart is about 4 hours from me in a place I've never visited.

this just happened to a friend of mine 2 weeks ago. The creditcard investigation said 2k was physically spent over in Japan, as in your case a duplicate of his card was also made. I wonder if this has anything to due with the recent report of that financial firm being hacked into. funny thing is after the 2k was spent they tried buying more but he was over the limit so they couldnt.

its scary for me to think about how many people I know that this has happened too. People seem to be getting away with this stuff too easily, maybe I need to change my day job.

Happened to me a few years ago. Citibank emailed me after $1200 was charged on my credit card shortly after it was activated. It was stolen from my mailbox and they were able to activate it from my phone. I was living at an apartment and am convinced that they stole it from my mailbox and tapped into my phone line. The Cops told me that they wouldn't bother doing anything, "have limited resources". Basically the merchants never get paid from the credit card company since they are required to check ID. It's equivalent to shoplifting.

Happened to me but it was over $5500. Took months to straighten it out. :(

edit: Should mention, name and expiration date were not mine.

I assume that it would not happen today---that was 1992.
