In my life I thought id never do it, but the GF wanted a new car, so we went to the Toyota dealership for fun, to test drive the Yaris.

Low and behold they had the exact yaris we wanted, black, 3door hatchback, and other little features we wanted. Talked em down to 12800 + TTL and stuff.


Soo guess we picked up a 2008 Toyota Yaris, should last her for a very long time.

I always thought it was a HUGE waste of money buying a brand spanking new cars, but man its nice to have 0 on the odo, and knowing how the car will be driven.

Plus, the MPG is reallly good on it.

I was going to get the 'extended' warranty, but wasnt sure if it was worth it, it was only an extra 1000$ and provides warranty up to 7 years. What do you think I should do, get it, or not?

On average, you will loose money. Take that same $1,000 and put it into an interest-bearing account specifically for repairs to the car after the warranty period has ended and you'll very likely come out ahead. Also, note the exclusions in the extended warranty. Chances are that it excludes most items.

Don't know for sure with Toyota, but with most manufacturers, you have until the factory warranty expires to purchase that same extended warranty. What's Toyota's initial bumper to bumper warranty? 3/36? 4/50?
Whatever it is, just keep that in mind and drive it. Note any problems the car might have, over that time frame, and keep an eye out on the 'net for others having problems with your same model.

Then, when the warranty is about to expire, you'll have a good idea of whether you should buy that warranty or not. In the meantime, you'll have your 1000 bucks in your pocket.

Also note, make sure that you have until the end of the factory warranty period to buy the extended first.

In addition, factory extended warranty usually come in at least 3 levels:

1. Powertrain-only. Engine, transmission, axles. That's it. No electric stuff, no EFI or emissions stuff. Mechanical only.

2. Mid-level....Ford calls it Extracare. This includes everything the powertrain warranty does, but adds in the major accessories, like A/C compressor, alternator, Power steering, window motors, etc. But still won't touch emissions/check engine light-type stuff, for the most part.

3. Top of the line: Ford calls it Premiumcare. Covers everything electrical or mechanical on the car that isn't a maintenance or wear item, like brakes, spark plugs, filters, etc.

Some makers have other niche warranty products, too. Be damn sure to read the coverage list, and never believe anyone who tells you an extended warranty is "bumper to bumper"....it isn't.

My father, in recent years always purchases an extended warranty. I would, but I lease, so there's no need. The reasons why is twofold: 1. Extended warranty is negotiable and typically has a 50% markup; 2. If you go to sell the car later on, having the warranty coverage will command a higher price and give you piece of mind knowing they won't complain the day after you sell it when something breaks.

It is called the Advantage, From the looks of it, it is Fords 'premiumcare'. Also includes tows to toyota dealerships, and free rentals, free jumps, free gas if you are on teh side of the road stuck without gas, etc.

The only real big expense I would worry about is the tranny going out, or anything like that. Which is why the 1k is not a bad deal , if it extends it 4 years, id have to check on how many miles though.

And from the looks of it, they did not 'charge' me for the 400$ rust protection thing , which also covers SURFACE rust for 10 years, if there is surface rust, they replace it free of charge. Also claims to reduce road noise.

I got the 120k mile warranty for my Fit. That way I'm worry free for four years.
