I got some memory from a friend, and put it into my rig to boost the performance of my box. It was another gig on top of the gig of mushkin i have in there. Well, i kept getting errors about my version being different that the one the server had on it. So, i reformatted, patched until i was blue in the face, then as a last straw before ebaying the game, i pulled two of the sticks after running memtest and a second in it started complaining. Never seen a memory stick cause such problems with software...

Are you sure it's the right voltage? Also, was the additional memory Mushkin as well? Never, ever, ever (I cannot stress this enough) skimp on memory. It doesn't have to be gamer memory, but it must be high quality (Mushkin, Corsair, etc).

No the additional memory was a major manufacturer for alot of major pc retailers. Its rated speed was only 2700, where my mushkin is 3200. Probably a difference there, and the latencies are obviously going to be different. Ive done this before, and never had a problem, but i guess this game is so demanding it requires it all be dead nuts on. Chock one up to software developers for making sure people have good stuff to run their games and stuff.
I dont skimp on anything. Especially memory, and pc parts. I just happen to get these given to me from a friend so i figured i would try it out. Its probably good ram, just doesnt want to run in this motherboard, in this configuration.

There's no way adding or removing memory will have any effect on the actual version of the game installed on your PC, so the only explanation is that you were running it so far out of spec that it was causing serious system errors as a result.

My first thought is this is a result of the PC2700 (333mhz) RAM being pushed to PC3200 (400mhz) ... you should try putting the new memory back in thesystem & manually set memory speeds to 333 mhz in the BIOS with timings set by SPD & see if it works then.

It shoudln't push it it should down grade the faster ram to match the slower..

exaclty. by you not correctly setting the memory speed/timngs is the problem, not the game. when you run two different speeds of memory, whether it be just latency difference or MHz differences, you need to manually set all the ram to the slowest set, so if that pc2700 ram was cas 3, you need to manually set all the memory to 333 (or 166 depending on how your m/b shows it) and the latency as cas 3.

unfortunately you were at error here and not a piece of software
