Never realized how hot RC5 makes my CPU!

I run RC5 24-7 and I've seen my CPU as hot as 50 C. I turned it off for an hour and my CPU is at 42!!

I've got an Alpha PAL6035 and arctic silver thermal compound on the CPU, 3 50 mm exhaust fans, and 1 80 mm intake fan. I guess this is an example of how much work is being done when you CPU is at 100% usage. 🙂

Same thing happens on my P3 😉 32C w/ RC5 full load, 28C w/o

P3-450 @ 620MHz (2.05V) with an Alpha P3125 (dual sunons)

Seeing you normally get 42C, 50C seems about right for RC5 on that CPU.

Hehe, yeah. Now, are you running win9x, or a Win NT kernal OS? If You're running 9x, the temp delta would be even greater with a Win NT kernal....(has HLT built in)

i'd like to have a moments silence for the amount of heat strain my brothers already over heating cyrix 166mhz must be under 🙂

Muerto,

You seem to overlook the fact that you're overclocking your Duron 33% above default. 😉 The exhaust of my Celeron 500 brought back down to default running rc5 doesn't feel hotter than when I was overclocking to 562MHz without rc5.

You know, RC5 doesn't make your computer run any hotter than it would when it's doing something (like playing a game, playing an MP3 and anything else that would use 100% of the CPU). Just so you know. Sure you can 'cool down' your CPU by shutting off RC5, but that'll all go away as soon as you start up a program. Heck, some screen savers can heat up a CPU as well as RC5 does.

Actually, MP3's don't use 100% of the CPU. Mine only uses about 1-2% of CPU power (win 2k task manager). And WinAmp is all the way on the bottem of the list, which mean its set to Very Low priority by default. 🙂

Muerto it is not RC5 that puts your temp at 50C but rather AMD and you ; )

50 seems a little high for Duron800/Asus but well within the range
check and make sure you have your Alpha fan in the right direction
and try removing the 'ATX' plug from around the keyboard/IO connector
so the CPU will get more outside air rather than getting the air from the GF ..it lowered my temp by 2C

but all of mine are running 49/50C 24/7 so dont worry about 50C ; )
