Never played Xbox, GC or PS2; what video game should I rent from Blockbuster?

Been so busy with college that I've never played any of the next-gen consoles. Got some time off (and I'm very bored) so I'm gonna go play some. But what games should I rent/consider renting? Any suggestions? No sports games. I want something fun and engaging but not TOO deep (i.e. Final Fantasy)...

I just watched the trailer to Halo 2 again.. I am excited. Only a year to go!

Grab an XBOX and Splinter Cell. SSX Tricky if you haven't played it. DOA Volleyball looks entertaining.

Also good, a PS2 and GTA3 or 'The Getaway.'

But, you could get a GameCube and Metroid....you might be able to beat it in a week if you play the heck out of it. Also good on Gamecube is Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2.

It does.

But Halo destroys most other games out there.

If it were up to me they would jsut put Halo in the rom of the xbox and rename the system Halo.

i'm surprised by the ravings about halo... since ive been so out of th video game scene for the last few years can you tell me what the consensus is on how halo compares to goldeneye/perfect dark?

also, what, in people's opinions, are the best games, regardless of console, that have come out over the last couple years on the nextgen consoles?

Halo is regarded by many as the best FPS ever.

strange, i've heard this weird rumor too, but people are just jealous that the gamecube and ps2's hardware capabilities are inferior, and also that Microsoft has so much financial capabilities that it can basically buy any game company

proof: metal gear solid 1 came out for ps, mgs2 came out for ps2, and after much "pressuring" it's out on xbox, and now metal gear solid 3 will either be xbox exclusive or it'll come out for xbox first by a longshot... also microsoft bought rare, might buy vivendi, etc. etc.

I dont understand why everyone thinks Halo is the best fps ever. Sure the graphics look great but the story was ok and there wasnt enough varying environments(levels). It felt boring because the a majority of the levels were really similar.

Games to go with the Xbox:
Halo(I dont think its that good), Splinter Cell, Dead of Alive 3, Panzer Dragoon Orta if you like shooting games. I know Im missing something here...

Gamecube:
Mario Sunshine(if you like platform stuff), Metroid Prime, Super Monkey Ball, maybe even Mario Party 4 if you got buddies to play with, Super Smash Brothers Melee.

Ps2
Grand Theft Auto 3: Vice City, Tekken 4, Devil May Cry, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers(if you like beat'em ups, not sure if they are out yet for xbox or gc they might be), Grand Turismo 3: A-spec (driving game).
