Never played FF7 before, worth shelling out the dough at this point?

Cheapest I've found it on ebay thus far is $45. How would this game even look on my hdtv/ps3 considering it's age? I've been meaning to play this game forever so I want to give it a whirl, but if it's going to look like a mess I don't want to waste $$$

Have you really enjoyed every other FF game? Then maybe it's worth it. If not, then no it hasn't aged that well unless you know you'll like it.

I've pretty much liked all the ones I've played, with the exception of 12.

I think it's worth playing if you've liked other ones that you've played. You don't know anyone that has it that you could borrow it from?

It's probably worth it if you liked the others. It's the only one I've been able to make it all the way through. I have no idea how good it'll look, but I doubt anyone would call it pretty these days. it wasn't even very pretty when it came out (except for the cut scenes).

Does the PS3 upscale PS1 games like it does with PS2 games?

Just wait for the inevitable remake.

Unless you want to play Crisis Core.

How did you not like 12?

But short answer: Buy it now.

Thats what I'd say. Seriously, a remake it absolutely inevitable, although who knows when itll happen.

The PS3 can upscale PS1 games, but its really little different than the upscaling your TV would do. Its not actually rendering at a higher resolution, and PS1 games run at an almost painful 320x240, and its not exactly a graphical masterpiece to begin with.

I'm not saying dont do it, as it really is a great game, but I wouldnt spend $45 on it at this point.

I liked the combat system, but I didn't like the skill board. I wasn't a fan of the overall plot either.

I ended up buying FF7 though... $47 so I hope it's worth it :p

It really is a great game but asking if an 11yr old 3d game is going to look good is just stupid.

I got mine for $30 off eBay, and it's the original non-Greatest Hits version. :Q I think I got lucky.

It is rather strange that they haven't remade it yet. The PS3 remake that everyone was hoping for would be really expensive to make, but a remake for the PSP and/or DS would be pretty cheap to make and really profitable. I'd love to see it happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

I would disagree that it hasn't aged well. Games with rudimentary 3D graphics don't age well. Games with poor controls (by today's standards) don't age well. I think FF VII looks fine. The graphics were mostly pre-rendered, so they don't look like crap. The controls and gameplay are obviously fine. I think all of the Final Fantasy games have aged just fine, with the possible exception of the NES titles. Not because of the graphics, but because the RPG mechanics weren't as refined as in FF IV+. Case in point - attacking an enemy with multiple party members, enemy dies earlier than expected, subsequent party members still try to attack the same enemy with obviously no effect. They fixed that in the re-releases. Also having generic party members limited the story (I think that was only an issue in FF I though).

I'm not expecting it to look good, but I haven't played a ps1 game on my ps3 before, so I was just curious just how bad it would be at it's low resolution

The lower resolution is even more obvious on a modern HDTV. The PS3 will do very, very little to make it look better. For some reason people have it in their head that console "upscaling" is actually a big deal, when its really nothing more than a resize and a sharpen and/or blur filter.

PC version would have been the way to go, there are quite a few hacks available that make the game look much better.

You'll be happy with the PS1 version. I replayed it recently, and after 20 minutes, I didn't care at all about the blocky characters. The story and gameplay is just as great as ever. You'll love it.

Just don't do what i did when i first played the game. Don't name the main character Zack. It will make your head hurt later on in the game. Seriously.

Wholehearedly agree with this post.

Hmm should I give FF7 another whirl, I've finished it twice already.

But I feel for you, really I do. :p

I rank FF7 the 2nd best game I've ever played. The graphics will be...underwhelming, but the story and battle mechanics still hold up.

I cannot find it for a reasonable price and I have a PC that I can drop a VooDoo5 5500 in to run it in native GLIDE mode as well :(

I have heard that the PC version has an updated dialog translation, does the greatest hits playstation version feature the improved dialog as well?

It would be nice if they just remade it for the PS3...

What would you rank #1?

And as for the original post, it is definitely worth the money

I am honestly surprised they have not added it to the list of PS1 games that can be downloaded from the store. I paid for Castlevania: SOTN and would love to pay for FF7 as I think my disks might fail due to age and use so I might not be able to make it all the way through the game

As long as you can get over the poor models of your guy that you see while walking around the world.

It is a fantastic game. I still play it when I get bored of other games. There is just so much to do in that game. When I play it through I do everything, even breed chocobos.
